It's a 1975 recording with Susskind and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Still waiting for the perfect Planets.

Yes, I own it. To me it sounds pretty impressive, but I'm a novice when it comes to classical.

I found a copy used on amazon.co.jp and bought it. I'll report once I get it this next week.

dear jd, if you don't mind getting a DVD-Audio or have DVD-A capacity, I can recommend the Previn recording of the Planets, recorded in quadrophonic sound back in the '70's (about the same time as the Susskind).

For a combination of fine performance and audiophilia the Gardiner Deutsche Grammophon SACD is probably the best available, although the Previn DVD-A must be alongside it. A pity Dutoit's superb Decca recording is only on CD.

Hi, are you referring only to the performance here, or both the sound and the performance?
Personally I had never cared for either of Previn's two most famous recordings of the piece -- the earlier one on EMI, or the one for Telarc some years later.

This is a winner all the way around IMO. I didn't review it because the one by John is enough.
