I do not recall I ever saw ABBA or Bee Gees released in SACD.

But check this out (see the pictures):

From Hong Kong! Also check out other sacd titles from this seller.

My gut's feeling is that this must be a set of pirated CDs with just a SACD logo on it. But I just wish I was wrong.

Not long ago I posted about a guy selling the Beatles double album on sacd on Ebay.
He had bought it from Hong Kong..I asked him to prove it was an sacd before I reported it to Ebay.
He first said he didnt have an sacd player.
I gave him another chance by asking him to go to a local hifi shop and see if the sacd lit up on any sacd player.
IT DIDNT.Listing was removed.
We have also had reports of Crystal Gales greatest hits on sacd.
Its possible the translation of HDCD gets "Super Audio status" but thats being generous.

I tend to be merciless to these kind of people.

But I did not find a way to report to ebay on this hoax, either. Instead, I email this guy to warn him about the trouble.

Just reported the 2 titles to ebay for misleading titles. There are several other 'sacd' titles from him, but I did not bother to check.

From the sticker, these are made in mainland China, and are supposed to be sold in mainland China only. The plastic wraps even have "ChinaRecord" on it. What a jungle! Anything can be faked over there.

How about starting on Amazon.com
There are a load of items which appear regularly over in Amazon USA.Just type in super audio in search ?
Occasionally I find sellers with sacds which also dont appear under normal sacd search.ie When you browse salesfronts..If they are not listed by Zeus I dont bother now.
Most of these would be interesting/Waylon Jennings etc appears regularly.
A few of which I bought.Turned out normal CDs.
Apart from the top few Amazon sellers Caiman etc I have regular failure with USA sellers.Received advice today of another item,They couldnt find it when they went to look for It?.
Always seem to happen when its a bagain...
Also got a "Gladiators" disc that wasnt an sacd from France.Didnt like to mention it as Julien might think Im getting at him.All in French.
PS It was awfull.
I thought of starting a thread "The worst discs" received..

hehe

I had 4 instances of normal CD sold as SACD from Amazon.

1) Anna Moffo's aria - received a "Musical Heitage Society" CD copy
2) Lang Lang's Tchaikovsky - received a CD (which I already have 3 years ago)
3) Telarc's "Sound of Glory" - CD listed as SACD
4) Diego Florez's great tenor arias - received a CD

Most of the cases are nicely resolved in my favor, either I return it to get a full refund, or I can just keep it, but still get full refund. In one case, though, they just wanted to refund the shipping or I had to pay the shipping to return it.

The good thing for Amazon reseller are that there is still guarantees, if you are patient enough to go through all the procedures; and many resellers are willing to resolve the issue if you really make yourself heard.

For ebay, paypal's policy is such that if you received the "shipment", the charge is then in good faith. So, before any bidding on ebay, I will ask for barcode for further research.

Well, I am a Chinese from Mainland China. I do not mind people singling out China as one of the pirate CD kingdoms. Back to 10 years ago when I was still in Macintosh shareware business(selling very well in Japan), can anyone understand how frustrated I was that my software was hacked and distributed free in Mainland China websites? Zero tolerance to software/CD/DVD pirating, that is one of my principles, especially when people can actually afford it. I mean, Julien could not be possibly that imperfect as you have described? ;)

You mean this SACD?

It was listed as a future release at ABC Records' official website but was later released as a regular CD. Unfortunately, ABC Records chose to misrepresent the CD as a XRCD and received a publicly published letter from JVC, the patent owner of XRCD, to stop such marketing practice.

As for HDCD vs. SACD, there's clear distinction for those 2. FIM (First Impression Music) is one of few music companies that has HDCD-encoded CD layer on their hybrid SACD and those logos are clearly marked on the disc's exterior. It's quite clear cut which is which.

Isn't China Records the State-owned record company? Pirating State-owned properties can mean a death sentence, no? On the other hand, I truly believe that the government itself is involved in the piracy business.

China Records did release a number of SACD titles and I believe recently partnered up with a Hong Kong label for more SACD releases.

I share a similar frustration regarding able to purchase legitimate music items, whether CD or SACD, from Hong Kong. Pirated music stores operate openly here in the San Francisco Chinese community and I've been driven to order from overseas vendors to get my music legally. You should see people's face when I mention I owned several hundred HK legitimate CDs. LOL

China Records is the government owned business. But no one can guarantee anything even if the CD comes with an legitimate ifpi number. The government's action on such activities is only -nil-. Well, maybe when Clinton visited a city, the markets in the whole city are cleaned up to cover up the real issue.

As a result, China Records (and many many other Chinese native labels) have been in deep red for many many years..., even after China Records are half privatized to be operated now by a private company.

Any further reference on China Records cooperation with Hong Kong labels?

Last time I heard seems that some personals in China Records are very very negative about SACD format, especially during their fights with ABC records (they thought ABC records never got any SACD done, and therefore punished it by revoking the licenses - well as a matter of fact, there are actually 4 SACD titles from their co-operation).
