Discussion: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8 - Herreweghe

I received this last week and played it once. Thought it was quite exciting! The sound is not quite as refined as I had hoped, but don't let that stop you...it all may be my left and right speakers that are less refined than PentaTone's B&W monitors. On listening to it again today I felt I just had to express my very great enthusiasm for what has been accomplished with the 5th symphony. Here we have a period informed performance on modern instruments that in my opinion puts the quite respectable Haitink rather much in the shade.
I wonder if others will agree or disagree. Some really beautiful playing....must mention the bassoon solo and oboe, and the principal horn player.

I have always been quite impressed by the Kleiber. But in some ways it seems to me that Herreweghe out Kleibers Kleiber!.... and this is due, I think, to the influence of period performance practice that has more or less been taken to its most impressive execution on modern instruments.
