I wouldn't buy a SACD with no stereo mix.

I only listen to the MCH layer - I would echo the questions about whether you need to utilise the ".1" channel to save space and aid bass management.

Even if you have a multi-channel system, you may need the stereo mix in case you want to use a headphones. And also you may have some multi-ch system, but also some stereo only system.

2 channel only and has no intention to change in the near future.

By the way, my multi-ch system is 5.0.

I don't need the stereo-mix when there's a mch-mix. But I still buy stereo-SACD's also.

Would making it a 5.0 mix instead of a 5.1 one save enough space to include the stereo mix? I prefer 5.0 as this plays nicer with bass management.

Interesting point about doing 5.0

It seems that doing 5.0 makes little difference to the amount of data on the disc compared to 5.1, presumably because even when present it is not used much and the sound through it is very simple (don't quote me on this please!). 4.1 would probably make a bigger difference but is certainly less preferable.

Headphone support is a strong case for keeping stereo.

I may be opening the floodgates here, but are many listeners using headphones?

Personally I rarely if ever use the stereo DSD mix. Irrational as I am, I more or less expect the stereo mix to be there but in all honesty I don't need it and it's not realy a buying criterium for me.

Of course, if playing time is a concern, a double-layer SACD is an alternative option (i.e. discarding the Red Book layer instead of the stereo DSD mix).

It continues to surprise me how in the high-end segment, especially in Japan, brands continue to release stereo-only SACD players.

Chaz,
I only have stereo system, and occassionally use headphones, but not often.

Here's something else to consider - Before you began recording in multichannel, LSO made numerous "high density" stereo recordings. I understand why you are not releasing these back catalogue recordings as hybrid discs. But, as stereo only sacd's you could release, say the Elgar symphonies on a single disc. There were numerous Berlioz and Dvorak recordings as well.
Has this been considered, or even thought about?
