Can anyone tell me which DAC is in the Pioneer Elite VSX-94TX?
It's only $1079 in some places and other than bridging, VLSC and Ultra2 certification there doesn't appear to be much difference.
It says it accepts DSD through HDMI so I"m wondering if it is also the PCM1796?
I might go that route. The bridging on the 905TX to 220w/ch for stereo is an incentive, but I don't think it's worth an extra $500 and neither is the toroidal transformer.

EDIT - just remembered, the Onkyo has Reon upconversion too, but I'll mostly be using Blu-ray so that's not such a big deal.
However the 94TX states for HDMI SACD trasfer "allows the SACD signal to be sent directly through HDMI for PCM processing in teh receiver"

I guess it's back to hunting for the elusive TX-SR905 then.

=D

Hi SACD fans,

Just wanted to share my experience with SACD multichannel playback on Pioneer DV-600AV hooked up with HDMI 1.3 to Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver.

There is no multichannel DSD via HDMI, only stereo no matter how the settings are on the player and the receiver!

Analog Multichannel 5.1 output works well producing clear sound with rich details.

There must be a bug in Pioneer's firmware as manual clearly states that the player will output 5.1 DSD via HDMI. In fact it does output DSD via HDMI but only for the front channels.
I can't here any difference in the stereo sound via HDMI or analog output, but it may be my ears :-)

I'll try to get the information from Pioneer on this issue and update the thread accordingly.

Nah, i had the DV-48AV (US twin) for a week and it had the same glitch, the Troubleshooting section of manual even stated it only outputs 2 channel via DSD.

Get the Oppo, you will have instant command response times, i returned my Pio, i still get people criticizing me and telling me it was just me, and "multichannel" works, i suspect they talk about downrezzing to M-PCM via HDMI.

Glad to see i am not the only one, this is clearly a design flaw, i returned mine.

Actually, the PS3 outputs at 192kHz (PCM) to a HDMI-equipped receiver.

My bad, you are right, still DSD improved sound qulity by a lot in my system.

Can anyone comment on this statement from David Rich in Sensible Sound:

"The Yamaha (RX-V2700) uses a Texas Instruments DSD1791 DAC which has a DSD passthrough mode for converting the DSD signal to a bipolar voltage...This bipolar voltage is then filtered in the analog domain."

Does this mean the Yamahas have the "real thing" without resorting to PCM ?

I am also interested in the pioneer 600 here in the UK (lest the PS3 shows nay sign of DSD pass through).

as has been stated by our fellow forum member, the 600 DOES (sorry, SHOULD) do DSD pass-through in multi-channel. Maybe it just differs from its US 'twin'. I really hope so because it would be a worthwhile investment as it would tackle the twin issues of DSD pass-through AND DVD-A playback.

I have checked the online manual (PDF copy of the actual manual) and it clearly refers several times to 5.1 DSD output via HDMI for SACD discs. So not a problem.

Therefore there are two possibilities. Either the settings are incorrect on your Pioneer (output) or Onkyo (input) OR your Pioneer has a fault.

You don't get it do you?

The 600 in the UK and the 48 in the USA ONLY ALLOW a 2 CHANNEL layer DSD passthrough. They will not allow 5.1 channel DSD layer to be passed trough, only decoding it instead to be output via analog. This is a real blow, because many discs are encoded in multichannel, especially for owners of the new crop of HDMI 1.2 and above DSD decoding receivers.

I DO get it, mate. but the spec on the Pioneer 600 in the UK, says 5.1 DSD HDMI output. Pretty darn conclusive.

DV-600AV
: The HDMI connection is
compatible with 2 channel linear PCM
signals (44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, 16 bit/20 bit/
24 bit), and Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG
audio bitstream, multi channel DSD, and
multi channel linear PCM signals, (5.1
channel signals up to 96 kHz, 16 bit/20 bit/
24 bit).

Okay, ALMOST conclusive.

Right, the Pioneer DV-600V manual states the ability to pass 5.1 DSD through HDMI from SACDs. This should happen when the "Initial Settings" for HDMI is Auto (DSD) on the Pioneer.
For some strange reason it has not been working with my Onkyo TX-SR805 for some time. After my recent post here I decided to try it again and to my great suprise it worked! I've really not changed anything on the receiver...

Now when I play 5.0 SACD via HDMI I see "DSD Direct" on the Onkyo display and the sound is indeed multichannel.
I can't hear the difference though between DSD and analog multichannel sound on my Monitor Audio Silver RS Series surround set of speakers.

Thanks to all of you for the feedback!
