Thread: SACD titles available - sourced from DSD or analogue please.

I have a question about searching for SACD - in a purer form.

1996 I first heard that a Sony/Philips team had recorded a small Danish jazz ensemble in a new system called DSD. Something about the article at the time struck me as a truth and I had joined the DSD bandwagon, waiting years at that stage for any hint of even a machine at all.

I listen to vinyl. However, at the time, should I be tending toward a digital listening career then CD was not it. They were just a convenience, like MP3s are today.

These days with a machine and an urge to have a small library of SACDs I find myself now struggling to find releases sourced from DSD or analog material. I regularly put a SACD down once I have read it came from PCM. It is to my total dismay that ANY music was recorded in 44.1kHz/16bit at all. I think this has been an historical insult to the musicians to have lost so much of their data.

So my question. Having already seen some entries on SA-CD.net with a DSD 'recording' info, is there an easier way to have this information without opening each individual entry? Is there a search that someone has used to find such a list? Has SA-CD.net a list of SACDs sourced from real sources (non-PCM)?

Thanks. Dave C.

In the drop-down menu at the top right of the page (the default says "Recent Additions") you can choose "DSD Recordings".

As for analog, you're on your own.

Bear in mind that recording in PCM does not automatically mean 44.1kHz/16bit. Probably most SACDs that were transferred from PCM masters were made in 96kHz/24bit. Arguably not the same quality as DCD but far better than Red Book.

Wouldn't it be easier to flag those SACDs which were made from 16bit/44kHz PCM (or 24bit/44kHz, like some Universal Classics SACD reissues)? They are a small minority.

There still are excellent recordings, on Bis, Hyperion or Chandos for example, that were made in high rez PCM. Some are up there with the best sounding pure DSD actually. Depending on your system you might hear a slight difference or not. But be aware that some pure DSD recording will not sound even close to those excellent PCM recordings. Even though most of us here believe that the same recording will still be slightly better in DSD compared to 24/192, don't be blinded by the technology. The recording equipment used and the sound engineers matter a lot more.

Thank you all.
