Hi everyone,

At the time when Joni & Co. re-released her catalogue on HDCD, I assumed it was an improved resolution that would play on all CD players and didn't think much of it at the time. The CD sounded great, but little did I know ...

Now, many years later, I own an OPPO DV-980H player and OPPO (www.oppodigital.com) makes a point of notifying consumers that to experience HDCD quality, you must have an HDCD-compatible player which their models are.

I've sold my Joni CD's over the years, and I don't expect her catalogue to end up on SACD anytime soon. Therefore, do you think it would be wise to re-purchase my favorite Joni albums a second time in order to reap the benefits of HDCD or is there not enough of a difference vs. the 192kbps MP3 files stored on my PC to do so?

Thanks in advance for your time and replies,

Dan

I have several of these Joni HDCDs. They are impressive, particularly Court and Spark which seems to have the most depth. The HDCD however, can make the low resolution of the original overdubs come through, like the sax on "Help Me". Still, these can bought pretty inexpensively. I can't gaurantee you will be satisfied, but they are better than the regular discs out there.

Here is a pic of the wav form for "Help Me" if this is of any help. Apparently, the folks who did the HDCD do not use that nasty Loudness effect. As you can see, the wav form has not been clipped at all.

Hope this helps. Again, your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the info and demo. Everytime I use my OPPO, the HDCD label on the top beckons me to put one of Joni's CD's in there, so I may repurchase "Hejira" as it's my all-time fave and I will hunt down a copy of "Both Sides Now" on DVD-Audio as well.

Keep your comments coming!

I have the HDCD of "Blue" but I didn't realize it until I re-recorded my entire library in lossless format last year, and while listening to music through itunes over optical to my HDCD-enabled Denon 3805, the HDCD light popped up on the receiver's display.

What's funny is I remember thinking that it sounded really good...better than I expected or remembered.

Well, of course it did.

I've got a set up that allows me to easily A/B test between the HDCD and RB, and the difference is clear.

I really appreciate the added value of the HDCD...a nice surprise.

That's great news ... I don't want to shoot my own foot before re-purchasing "Hejira" on HDCD and hearing what happens, but I do wish HDCD gave way to some multichannel capabilities. I'll have to remain optimistic and patient to one day hear Jaco's bass, Larry's guitar and Neil's harmonica coming from different points of my living room. Incredible possibilities.

Hi everyone,

I've perhaps given up on ever expecting Joni to join the likes of Bob Dylan, Carole King, Eric Clapton and Elton John by doing a partial catalog in SACD, but nevertheless, I was very happy to discover today that 3 of Joni's works (Court And Spark, The Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Hejira) will be released August 10th this year for the first time ever as a 2CD expanded set.

I own 2 copies of Hejira, including the HDCD version and it's my favorite lyrical album of all time. I had always wanted to hear outtakes and extras from these sessions and it looks as though this sonic pipedream will finally come true.

No details on what is included on the 2nd CD's as of yet, but preorders are available through spincds.com and play.com, both of which are based in the U.K. for about $18 US.

Cheers,

Dan

It looks like Warner Japan is releasing Joni Mitchel on SHM-cd until 1979 this spring - I was wondering whether this means that they might finally come out on SACD - after all Warner has begun releasing SHM sacds?

That would be great, though I have a feeling that SHM-CD is a bit snake-oilish, and issuing a disc in this format would require no extra mastering/returning-to-the-master-tapes work. I think it's unlikely Warners would be doing any more than applying snake oil.
{EDIT} according to jonimitchell.com they're going to be SHM-CDs. Pity.

Supposedly, done right, HDCD encoding/decoding results in 20 bit resolution. Thousands of RBCDs have been encoded with this process and some RBCDs do NOT bear the HDCD symbol and you won't know it until the HDCD light comes on.

I have about 5 HDCD compatible players (4 Oppos and 1 Rotel) but understand that the Cary 808 SACD/CD player is one of the best HDCD players out there......

The Joni Mitchell HDCD~encoded albums all sound relatively good (Blue and Court & Spark being the standouts) but, IMO, are NO match for SACD resolution.

Maybe down the line, Warner will see fit to finally give us Joni Mitchell's extensive catalogue in TRUE hi~rez!

I remember reading somewhere that the CD layer of a Hybrid disc can be HDCD encoded. I was told that the CD layer of Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arm's" is in fact HDCD encoded. I don't have a HDCD player so I can not verify. I remember there were two version of the "Brothers In Arms" RBCD,, a HDCD and SBM. Also, the issue of HDCD noise has arisen before, does this refer to playback through a conventional RBCD players?
cheers
