Funny, I was under the impression that Philips manufactures light bulbs!

They have for over a century but I believe those have been outlawed by now. Anyway, they stopped with SACD players about six years ago and in the meantime they've abandonded making TV sets too.

As I remember it, Philips bought the patent for the light-bulb with an unlimited life-span, and then put it in the safe. What a wonderful company...

When you consider that SONY and Philips partnered to create RBCD and SACD that they would be capable of "creating" statement components of lasting quality that would've endured to this very day. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Knowing nothing about the SACD 1000 player, a question arises: Would the Oppos be better machines, in comparison, with their 2011 electronics/dacs? And we all know that at least OPPO has a stellar customer service department.

And was the 1000 multichannel?????????

And it seems to me that the 1000 should come with a bottle of Philips Milk of Magnesia to settle the stomach when quality control issues arise!

There is no such patent. Of course, sometimes when you invent something it's better to keep it secret than to patent it (because then you would have to disclose how you do it) but really there is no such invention here. It's a myth.

What is interesting however is that the Philips bros. wouldn't have been able to start their lightbulb factory if proper intellectual patent law had been in place in the Netherlands at that time.

Yes, in fact it was the world's first multichannel SACD player. Sony only had stereo players at the time.

And although some components seem to suffer from reliability issues it sounds fantastic, thanks in no small part to the Marantz-designed and -manufactured DAC board.

I have a wonderful love/hate relationship with my SACD1000. I bought it in the Sound Advice blowout. It was one of the last units to go through the Tampa Philips repair center where it lived for several months while the very determined repair technician kept replacing the troublesome chip until he found one that didn't fail. I still have it, and it is still working (about twice a year it stops playing in the middle of an SACD, but after unplugging it and plugging it back in it's good for another six months).

I use it mainly for two-channel SACD playback, but when my Sony 779ES is out of favor (another love/hate relationship) I use it for CD playback, too. It sounds great most of the time (I and it have our bad days).

Biggest lighting company in the world, has been for decades, now even fixtures in North America. #2 in medical imaging. Even Siemens gave up on lighting selling OSRAM, cus it needs too much money to compete against #1 PHILIPS GE is #2.
