By 2006, there were 13 million SACD players installed worldwide. By the end of this year that may have doubled, thanks to PlayStation3, and it may grow to well over 100 million by 2011, if the success of PS1 and PS2 is anything to go by. Even though not all of these will be interested in and actively buying SACD, it still constitutes a relevant market, IMHO.

Yes, but I don't see Sony reacting to that. Yet. Shouldn't they churn out one SACD after another by now?

Hear hear, Ear!

Contrast that with the recent announcement by Sony that within months, Sony will produce no more DVD's and will only produce Blu Ray. You would think they would go to all physical music media being hybrid SACD, then everyone wins.

Amazing! Well, but I dont see that happening. The consequence would be all physical music on SACD only. Not hybrid. Hybrids are supposedly too expensive. As well as the surround mix for the music. So I am not sure about this at all. They should ahve done that from the beginning. Stick to their product like they do now. But heck.

I am not sure (I am German) what you meant with 'hear hear' but as I understand it, you agree with me, they should have done that.

Did they announce that? Now that would be near-suicide (for Sony Pictures Entertainment's home video division).

I don't think they did. What Sony announced last week is that *in Japan* Sony is dropping DVD *recorders* in favour of Blu-ray Disc recorders. They might also drop DVD-only players in favour of BD/DVD players (in the Japanese market) but it doesn't say anything about the playback media, nor anything about western markets.

As a playback format, DVD-Video is far too established (in Japan as well as elsewhere) to ignore.

Sorry. I stand corrected and ashamed of getting my information from an unreliable source and transmitting it as reliable fact. Doh.

I would imagine that if they remastered the Beatles collection for SACD, so that it could be played on a normal CD player as well, that the collection would be the biggest selling SACD's ever.
Really, the original release of the Beatles collection was mediocre at best and if they remastered them I believe that they would sell very well. I love the Beatles music, but I refrain form listening to their CD's as my time is valuable and if I am going to spend time listening to music, with the little time I have to do so, then I want it to be as fulfilling as possible. Listening to the Beatles current CD's only fulfills one aspect of the experience, the songs themselves, not the Hi Fi aspect. I suspect that we all feel the same way.

A high quality Beatles re-issue in high-definition is long overdue! What are they waiting for? Who has the rights now? It is so good that George Martin is alive and kickin'! the one and only producer that can oversee and do high-def reissue of the Beatles catalog (since he has one of the original masters that assured their success).

However, I have a big question: "Love" was released on DVD-Audio and not on SACD, although SONY appears to share the copyright with "ATG", does it mean they do NOT endorse SACD format anymore not even for their material? Or do you think that because of the particularities of the old Beatles material, DVD-Audio was more appropriate for a high def. format than SACD? i.e. they did not have a SACD-proof digital master that could have stood up to the standards or expectations?

Does it mean that a SACD release of the Beatles will never happen?

What's ATG? For all I know, the copyright lies with Apple Corps which is still an EMI affiliate.

My guess why they chose DVD-Audio is that for the whole remastering and remixing process they had chosen to transfer the multitrack master tapes to 24-bit 96kHz PCM, which makes the transition to DVD-Audio rather natural (though transfer to SACD would still have been possible) so technical rather than commercial considerations.
