Does anyone know whether this release represents a change of heart by CSO Resound regarding SACD?

The Mahler 6 on CD got rather poor reviews here in the UK, not least for the sound quality.

I hope we can now expect more from this source on SACD.

I believe so but am not 100% certain - will try to confirm

I have already posted this in another thread:

Here is what producer James Mallinson told The Stereophile about the CSO Resound project:

"Recording in surround future-proofs the project, even though there are obviously some issues about the future viability of SACD as a release medium," he explained by phone. "Hi-rez formats will undoubtedly have a future, and I believe someone should embrace them. Nonetheless, the CSO is mainly a concert-giving organization that has just gone into the record business for the first time. They're going through a steep learning curve, and being very conservative in how they approach the venture. They don't want to commit to things they might ultimately feel they ought not to have done. So they're taking things one step at a time.

"On a personal level, I believe very strongly in hi-rez surround. It adds a whole different dimension that you're incapable of realizing with two-channel 16/44.1. Those who say CDs miss an element of analog are, in my opinion, correct. The standard format gives you the carapace of the music, but it hasn't got the emotional core that DSD gives you. When you add the surround component as well, it really puts the music in real space and removes it from the speakers. If you close your eyes, and it's properly done, you feel like you're in a real concert space."

The Mahler 3, not 6, is a marvellous performance. Haitink is obviously having an indian summer - and his new Mahler 4 on RCO Live is a revelation.

The sound on the CSO Mahler 3 is rather lacking in depth, but it is dynamic and well defined in a quite close accoustic. I´m looking forward to the Bruckner 7, and hoping for a 4 and 9 either from Chicago or Amsterdam.

Thanks Edvin for the correction of my typo.

Michelle de Young was disappointing on the MTT Mahler 3. Is she any better in Chicago?

I agree with what you say about Haitink and have just ordered his Mahler 4.
I was hoping for a Bruckner 6 even since I saw him conduct it with the Dresden Staatskapelle. Who knows?

Thanks also Daland I missed your earlier posting.

One wonders if Haitink even flinches when he as asked to record the same piece of music for the third, or even fourth time in his career. This epitomizes what remains wrong with the music industry, which strangely, Haitink has railed against in the past.

Yes - BUT

When a musician like Haitink does it over again with the characteristics of (as was said above) "Indian summer" wherein his intrepretive instincts have seemed to sharpen and we get the benefit of superior sound, I can't believe this is anything wrong. I feel privileged rather than put out. Still there are a lot of under-recorded and not yet recorded things out there I would have preferred to see over those that are featured in this discussion.

Profil released earlier this year a live recording (on CD) of Bruckner 6 with Haitink conducting the Staatskapelle Dresden. It was taped at the Dresden Semperoper on November 2, 2003.

What I am wondering is why the price is so high - is this a two disc item?

Yes I have the Bruckner CD - a fine performance though Celi's live Munich performance on EMI is better.

I haven't heard the CSO M3 but the recent M4 is superb, with very flowing tempi and woodwind nicely prominent. I don't think Schafer is the finest in the finale but the whole performance is among the best of recent years alongside Colin Davis' one with the Bavarian Radio SO.
