Thread: Noise from Denon DVD-2930 during Audible LFE Calibration

When calibrating my Denon DVD-2930 with Stay in Tune with PentaTone I hear a high frequent noise during the tracks 36-42 (Audible LFE Calibration), and that only when bass management is enabled.

I can also hear it during the drum beat in the beginning of track 1 in Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon but with bass management off there is no noise.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Edit: This is pretty clean at start of track on for Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon where there is a drum beating slowly. Disable bass management and the noise is gone.

I can't be sure about the 2930, I have the older 2900 but I do know that in one of the set up menus there is a "Filter" selection. I wrote Denon a couple of years ago and they told me that when the filter was engaged that the DSD stream was converted to PCM so that base management could be used. Perhaps this has something to do with that conversion. As for me I turn it off, which sets all speakers to large and handle all bass management via my processor keeping the DSD stream in its natural state.

I took the two above SACD with me to the dealer and he could verify for himself the problem on their own demo player. He was quite surprised at the high-frequent noise, and this issue is passed on to the Nordic distributor.

If it is not fixed I will have to deliver the unit back, which is a bit sad for otherwise I am very pleased with it.

Latest firmware installed in the shop 2930 demo player did not solve the problem, and now the dealer wants to contact Denon.

Back and forth between me, the B&M (http://www.hifiklubben.se/butiker/goeteborg_kungsgatan.htm) and their Nordic/Benelux distributor/owner(?) (Audionord) with the distributor unable to reproduce fault thus claiming no fault *) But the distortion is very clearly demonstrated in the shop by me and the employees using their own equipment.

Add Eleanor McEvoy: Early Hours track 2 to my above list of easily demonstrated distortion.

At this stage I want to return the unit (after much time used and testing I did for them), but now the shop owner/manager (Daniel) has to do his own testing to be sure, and that after two of his own employees has verified the problem. Good thing I have all the e-mail confirming the verification.

All the time during this process when I am in the shop I get comments/hints/actions of the type:

1) One should not use bass management but buy proper full-range speakers
2) Use the Denon link instead of the analog output
3) It is just this one SACD
4) Does it matter
5) It is your system not ours
6) Taking a _very_ long time to setup their own system to test this while I am there
7) Turn up the volume to the level of damaging my hearing

At every point I can show them this is an issue and they admit it but still give this very clear impression that they do not me to return the unit for full refund.

*) The Audionord guy (Ole Sørensen) said he could reproduce the issue on older two channel Denon receivers, but in the shop we used almost the latest one. Oooh, it could be _my_ receiver and they need it and the player for testing.

There is something wrong with this SACD altogether, can't you hear how distorted her voice is at least in the first few songs ... and these people claim to be experts in analog recording ... and the realty is that they are just not capable of recording a human voice.

I do not want them to get sidetracked on the recording/engineering quality itself when I want to demonstrate a bug in the Denon players bass management.

I need to show the shop multiple concrete examples of very clear _and_ reproducible playback distortion when enabling bass management contra "pure direct". Something they cannot deny hearing, and they don't in the B&M. This is why their procrastination boogles my mind and now they have it in public for all to see.

Today the manager of the shop confirmed himself that there is distortion, after two of his own employees has confirmed that earlier on several occasions.

At least the manager accepted that I return the DVD player, finally, on the day one month after I bought it.

But still they tried get me to accept that bass management for front speakers (ie setting speakers to "small" in setup) are wrong for floor standers. Good grief, after I several times before making it very clear that I want/need bass management for my front speakers as well. Again the argument "It is just me that has this problem" and I had to remind him what he confirmed himself 30 seconds earlier.

So now I am looking around for a new player to replace the replacement for my Onkyo SP-503.
