p.s. not aware that most labels are dual inventory, in fact Telarc is the only one I have come across.

Well to name just a few off the top of my head, DG and Hyperion were dual inventory labels as was Sony classical (perhaps a vestige of their early sacd days when their sacd's were not hybrids). While this kind of stupidity could be expected at DG and Sony I was astounded to see it at independents like Telarc and Hyperion. It's almost impossible to conceive of a marketing strategy more clearly destined to produce failure, and fail they did. The obvious common thread here is that with the exception of the trickle of discs from Sony all of these labels have abandoned sacd entirely.

I have to be very careful when I buy SACDs as 99% of the ones I buy are dual inventory, another reason I wish single-layer CDs would go away.

I am only aware of seven labels that offer single-inventory SACDs: Channel Classics, PentaTone, BIS, BSO Classics, San Francisco Symphony, Red Rose Music and Exton. Most of the SACDs I've purchased from the other 131 record companies I've tried are also available on CD. This includes not just Telarc, Reference Recordings, Delos, AudioQuest but all the major record labels.

Wehecht, that is indeed sad as many of my favorite SACD recording companies were of the dual inventory variety and you are correct many of them are gone. Wonder if they would have had better luck going the single inventory route?

PS: I recently had to return a Groove Note recording to Amazon.com as they sent the HDCD instead of the SACD. Dual inventory sometimes is a pain.

I haven't heard this yet. Is the recording really so bad than Castor wrote?

Luukas, your comment prompted me to look at Castor's review. You should read the review again, more closely. Castor did not write that the recording was bad, only that he had to readjust to a much higher listening volume before he could asses the strength of the performances and some deficiencies in the engineering. It is a generally positive review overall.

I have about a dozen recordings of the Alpine Symphony, two on SACD, and this is definitely the best in terms of performance. I only listen in stereo but the recording quality sounds excellent to me as well.

Thank you Mark.

That is exactly what I said in my review.

Perhaps Luukas confused your review with dc's.

You're welcome, Graham. I purchased Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, Metamorphosen - Luisi on the strength of your review, especially for the performance of Metamorphosen; my two-channel system is more suited for chamber music than large-scale symphonic works.

Was the Alpine Symphony also recorded by Andreas Neubronner and Stephan Schellmann from Tritonus?

Yes it was. Both Strauss discs were recorded between May and November 2007 by the Tritonus team.
