The August issue of the Pentatone Newsletter mentioned the Gramophone "Artist of the Year Award 2007" contest includes Julia Fischer as one of the top ten artists. Gramophone describes it as "possibly the biggest musical contest the world has ever seen".

Tom,
Thank you sincerely for this link. But in all honesty, I must confess that I threw my support to Steven Isserlis whose playing I have enjoyed for 15+ years -- and now I hope for some to-die-for SACDS. He was a young but complete artist when he recorded John Tavener's The Protecting Veil in 1991, now he strikes me as the epitome of what a modern major celloist should be.
Fischer is very good and may well take the prize (I don't think my vote will throw the election), but to my thinking, she is where Isserlis was in 1991. Again thanks for the notice, and apologies for not voting en bloc.

Beagle I'm with you!
I also thought about Repin and Abbado, because both came to one of my concerts and were very nice to me once. (The real reason of course being the great artists they are)
But Isserlis is so special, such a musician... and he never was a "mediatised" guy, so I think we need the world to start to appreciate all the fantastic recordings he has made. If only he could make SACDs...

Your e-mail address looks good. Please be certain that there is no [SPACE] or [ENTER/RETURN] character after .hu. If it still doesn't work, contact Grammophone and complain bitterly about discrimination against Hungary.
If all else fails, Fafnir, Windy or Tailspin will be glad to vote for you (for Fischer)
