...This may not however relate to recording in either DSD or PCM - possibly that may be a separate issue.

PCM as such may be a modest factor here. Perhaps the receiver's DSP processes everything in 16-bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz PCM. That would seriously matter.

My dad got a 970HD a few months ago, and while I'm very impressed by it as a DVD player, I've found a couple problems (entirely separate from the issue of DSD->PCM conversion) that render it unacceptable as a source for audiophile formats. Any idea if they've fixed these with the 980H?

-- It inserts pauses between the tracks of an SACD. I listened to Stravinsky's Les Noces with the 970HD, and the music suddenly cut off in the middle of the piece and resumed a couple seconds later.

-- When I inserted a DVD-A (Messiaen's Vingt Regards) that was supposed to have both a stereo and a multichannel mix, the player did not recognize the existence of the stereo program.

I haven't checked on the second issue, but the first can be fixed by a firmware upgrade. I'd simply email the support team and tell them the problem. They're very helpful and will send you the firware file that fixes it.

They actually have that firmware version posted:

Time to upgrade??

Does this mean that if one has such a DVD player outputting DSD in the raw form, to the Marantz SR8001 (with DSD DAC), for example, the sound quality will be better? Can we say that we have a combination approaching that of an entry level Elgar combination?

I don't know about that, but it would simplify the connection with just one HDMI cable.

Well, if you connect PS3 to a HDMI receiver, you are using 1 cable, too. But it is only outputting in PCM. Hm... it would be great if Sony upgrades the firmware to enable outputting DSD. There will be so many feedbacks from current users!

Well, that's why the Oppo 980 is talked about....it's the lowest priced SACD-capable player on the market that can pass DSD data via HDMI.

Lowest priced except for the new Pioneer 600 model which is already on sale in Hong Kong and Europe

But unlikely to be sold in the US.

Nonetheless, here's the first review of the Oppo 980

For multi-channel and through an AV receiver, does keeping the signal in pure DSD all the way before converting to analogue means that you cannot control the volume of the channels?
Or let's ask it this way:

1) Can I set up different volumes for each channel on the player and still transfer the signal in its pure DSD form through HDMI 1.2?
2) Or in order not to convert to PCM do I have to set the volume for the channels on the amplifier only?

This is very important to me, I hope some of you guys are experts on the subject!
