Osmo Vänskä is conducting the San Francisco Symphony this weekend (May 24-27, 2012). Program includes "Minea", a recent work by Kalevi Aho, Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 with Hillary Hahn, and the Shostakovich Symphony No. 6. I was fortunate to attend the concert yesterday afternoon; stunning performances.

Bissie, it would be wonderful if Vänskä could record the Shostakovich 6th for BIS. He brought out the lyricism of the largo movement, without ever losing focus. Very expressive solos by the woodwinds, which are favored in Davies Hall's acoustics. The Allegro and Presto movements brought down the house.

As for the Aho piece: an energetic, exuberant showpiece for the entire orchestra, especially the percussionists -- thunderous bass drum and kettle drum strikes! It was very well received by the audience.

- the Sorabji Transcendental Etudes will continue, but the poor bugger has to learn these unplayable pieces first. I am certainly crazy enough, but so far I have had no success in talking any orchestra into even trying.

Thanks for the reply on this. Let's hope Sorabji's music will get more attention in the future and maybe some orchestra will take interest then.
One more thing came to mind, is there yet an approximate release schedule for Kalevi Aho's 15th symphony? I've been looking forward to it since I heard it on Finnish radio last summer, and what a great piece of music it was. They revealed that a recording was made around the time of the Finnish premiere.
I guess you'll have a tough time in keeping up with Aho releases since he's composing so much. :) I like the two recent releases very much. Keep 'em coming! :)

Thanks.

Kalevi Aho's 15th Symphony will, according to plan, be released in March of 2014, together with the Double-bass Concerto and Minea.

Robert,
You may not be aware of the following thread on Audio Asylum Hi Rez forum in which dear old Disbeliever complains about the dynamic range of your sacd's being too great.

No, I had no idea. Gosh, how boring. If people cannot understand plain English, what can I do?
We set the top level. That top level is zero dB. The rest is done by the composition and the artists, NOT US.
Exactly what in this is difficult to understand?

If others in the same repertoire have a "higher average level", then either their artists aren't playing with the same dynamics or - more likely - the recordings are compressed. That's all there is to this "question".

I have lost my password to Audio Asylum, and when re-applying for it, they claim that my email address is incorrect.

Could someone please post the above in Audio Asylum and send greetings from me?

Best - Robert

There seems to be a positive correlation between a label's commitment to high quality performances being recorded in the best possible sound and just how much people will complain about said label.
