This is worth looking out for on the strength of the pianist. Some years ago, he recorded the first volume for Naxos's complete solo Liszt project. His technique on this CD is amazing, almost up to Argerich standards.
Cohen is about 60, and was born in Brazil to Russian Jewish emigre parents, reminiscent of Barenboim. I read somewhere that he hasn't recorded much due to a distaste for the hype of the piano virtuoso musical world. Hence none of his work has been passed off as being peformed by Joyce Hatto, although it deserves to be!

i saw him live just after that naxos disc was published, and he was indeed highly impressive. reactions to this new recording will be interesting.

Cohen appears to be a Liszt specialist - he has recorded the Liszt Sonata twice once on Carlton and again for BIS (BISCD1253). The latter disc has been highly praised by both BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone magazine.
This disc of Liszt Concertos would seem to be a very welcome release.

I totally agree this is long overdue.I wonder if we are goin to get another disc with his other piano & orchestra works.ie Wanderer Fantasy ,Grand Fantasy Lelio ,Malediction,Ruins of Athens fantasy,Polonaise Brilliante?. Perhaps Bissie can wet our appetite with a reply?.

And, because of that, we are releasing this SACD. You're all right - he is a most impressive pianist. Funny to think that he has supported himself for quite a while as a professional violinist!! Some people have got everything. I remember Freddy Kempf (another BIS pianist) telling me (when I played a CD with Paganini's 1st Violin Concerto): "Yeah, I remember the piece. Not easy at all - I played it when I was 15." It really isn't fair!!
As for the other works with Cohen - no, no plans as yet, but, of course, if enough people warm to this SACD, who knows...?

I dont believe you. Freddie Kempf never played a Cd of Paganinis Violin Concerto when he was only 15...LOL.
Ok Not sure its bad news that the other pieces are not earmarked for release as their is still a lot of other works that need the BiS treatment.Tchaikovsky 2nd/concert fantasia would be a much bigger seller.My personal dream is a version of Clara Schumanns concerto to die for.No Chance.
The market is still awaiting a decent fun pops Piano/Orchestra disc ..ie Litolff / Franck / Cornish Rhapsody/Dream of Alwn? et al.Cannot see one coming either..

I sincerely hope BIS do record more Cohen [ and for that matter, Laszlo Simon ]. Sudbin presumably received plenty of exposure for being photogenic, and appearing with some other youngsters on a 'Gramophone' cover.
It's disappointing that older pianists, who are mature artistically and still have their reflexes, aren't accorded as much exposure. Not only Cohen, but Koroliov, and Sokolov. Remember the bittersweet example of Jorge Bolet, who was sidelined for many years until Decca 'rediscovered' him in the late 1970s for their Liszt piano series. But by then, his technique was starting to wane. If Bolet had been recorded a decade earlier, as his RCA Liszt recital from the early 70s demonstrates, it would've been more memorable.

No, please don't believe that. It isn't true. But I also never said that he had recorded the Paganini 1. We listened to my recording of it with Ilya Gringolts, and then he let loose that comment. He played it, but he didn't record it. Still very impressive.

We may, but that's not why I answered. Sudbin doesn't get exposure - at least not with me - because of good looks. He is that rare creature, the pure genius. You wait until his Scriabin SACD comes out soonish. I don't think I ever sat so flabbergastedly after a listening to a first edit. I have recorded those pieces myself earlier, so I thought I knew them well. How wrong can one get? Sudbin just opened my eyes to this unique music. He took away the clouds, and the sun came out. What he did is supernatural. Impossible to describe, has to be heard. I cannot believe my luck that he is recording for BIS!!
