I have a few now, I would like to start with fast, exciting Classical first, or, if extremely well done, I could also try what your favorites are.

Thanks...

Rick

Definitely Linn's SACD recording of Organ and Orchestra works by Barber, Poulenc, and Petit. All the pieces are big and splashy and the organ part comes from the rear and the orchestra from the front. (Don't worry, the lowest organ notes are shot to the sub--which might not be in the same place when the music's over!) It's available from Amazon UK.

Stravinsky's "Petroushka," the "Firebird Suite" on Telarc SACD. Go right to the Infernal Dance (9) and Finale (11). I couldn't imagine anyone not liking these moments. The rest will get better with repeated listening. Stravinsky knew his rhythms and knew how to orchestrate vividly and his music was a model for action movie composers. You'll love the bass drum.

Finally, Ravel's "Bolero" etc on Mobile Fidelity. All the pieces seem to become favorites to those who come across them. A special word on the "Daphnis et Chloe" Suite, (a suite is a pulling together of the best music from a longer piece), it has a wordless choir which comes from the back to magical effect.

All of these SACDs are fantastic technically as well, the first two pure DSD and the last, a famous analog recording, (from 1975, but extremely vivid and impactful), originally recorded in discreet quad. The selections are relatively short in length, and even my brother, (who is normal), likes them.

Oh, to discover these pieces again for the first time.

First a point of clarification: you say "Classical," but I assume you mean just "classical." "Classical" (capitalized) usually refers to European music from about 1750-1830, whereas "classical" (not capitalized) generally means something like "not jazz, folk or pop," and includes music from the Middle Ages to the present day.

As a great enthusiast of Early Music (pre-Classical or "historically informed performance" [a.k.a. HIP]), I must recommend these (exciting!) titles, which also provide a nice sampling of some of the better labels:

Indispensable:

1. La Folia (Alia Vox) - www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/293

Extremely good:

2. Les Elemens (Linn Records) - www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/1511

3. Vivaldi: La Stravaganza (Channel Classics) - www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/336

A lot of fun and well worth owning:

4. Handel: Music for Royal Fireworks/Water Music (Telarc) - www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/816

5. Dream of the Orient (DG/Archiv Produktion) - www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/1888

Zeus has a feature on this site called "Recommendations". For example, if you click on my alias you'll get to my profile and you can click on recommendations and you'll see some of my recommended classical SACD's (along with non-classical). I haven't updated this for awhile, but there are some good choices there. I know that a few other contributors to this forum have posted their recommendations as well. It would be a good feature for Zeus to add a tab that went directly to recommendations - the way to get there now is a clumsy.

Anyway, the discs I've listed are good ones. Not sure what you mean by fast, exciting - one of the great things about classical music is contrast.

Welcome to a fascinating and addictive world.

Just updated my list of recommendations. Mostly classical.

There are some other nice classical SACDs, but those in my recommendations are the ones I'd love to bring with me to a desert island.
