I am not looking to buy a new SACD player anytime soon, but I do have a few things that I am looking for. I don't know if it is possible to buy a player under these conditions.

1. Single tray (not a changer).
2. Plays Multi-Channel, not just stereo.
3. Around $500, perhaps a little more.
4. Is not a Universal player.
5. Sold in Canada.

As far as I know, there appears to be only one Sony model in Canada that is inexpensive, but it is a changer. The 595. Anyone here know anything about the output stage on this machine?

My present player is the XE670. Anyone have any background on this machine?

Hope someone has a little more info than I do on these questions.

Thanks

About the only player that fills your needs is a used Marantz 8260 that is in working order.
The only other player that meets your needs is the Sony XE597, released only in UK. This is the same player as the CE595, but the 597 is single play. The output stage on these players has opamps. I have the ES version of this player, the C2000, and it's not bad. But I prefer the Marantz players.
Multichannel players now all tend to be dvd players.

There is a Denon 1930 which provides SACD playback. What is the word on the quality of this player? Does it provide Multi-channel playback?

Ok, this one is universal, but it is so inexpensive that is worth a try. It is OPPOHD-970, about $150.00.
It converts signals to PCM, but I hear very high praise for its sound considering the price, in fact I am obout to get one, at this price you can not go wrong with OPPO-970.

Sounds interesting... is there bass management? I looked at a review here...

Where did you get your info? Where can I buy this unit in Canada?

What about the Sony 595? Any opinions on this multi-channel changer? Avoid? Good? Bad? Great?

It looks like there are several Marantz SA-CD players listed on the Marantz site and they are all stereo only. poo!

Here are a couple of reviews:

http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/trl/595.html

I own the unit and I find the SACD sound sensational for the money, and, as far as I can tell, it handles DSD in its native form. However, CDs are barely listenable to me. I would encourage modification by TRL if the budget allows (current price of the mod is $750). I was told by the editor of Positive Feedback Online that the TRL Sony 595 has no competition under $1k.

Most of the info that I have on OPPO-970 comes from various internet discussion sites, including Audio-Asylum under Hi-Rez.
This player is also available in modded versions in $800 to $1600 price range, the price includes the player.
From what I hear the high rez PCM from this player produces fairly decent sound, in fact the only way to get the full benefit of DSD is to consider very expensive players.
One amazing thing about this player, so far no mention of trasnsport related problems, which sounds unreal for a player of $150 range.
For questions regarding bass management or anything else call OPPO, they are really friendly and will help you with your questions.

I've owned the Sony 595 for about a year and a half and like it very much for both SACDs and CDs. The sound quality is excellent. There have been no reliability issues and it plays discs that my previous player (a Pioneer all-in-one) could not play without skipping.

A few quirks: The remote is not designed to turn the unit on and off or open the tray. There is no separate cd left and right output; it must either be taken via Y connectors from the front left and right mch outputs or from a TOS cable.
