Thread: Record Clubs now carrying SACDs?

A co-worker pointed out to me that the BMG music club was now offereing Hybrid SACDs to the members. Does anyone know if any of the other music clubs (Columbia House? are there any others?) is following suit?

It is interesting to see SACD making headway into these sort of marketing outlets. I haven't seen DVD-As making as much headway into "popular" CD distribution channels like this.

Anyway...

After looking over the BMG site, I noticed a couple of things:

1) There is a selection of SACDs, but like most music clubs, the selection is very very limited.
2) Only members can puchase the SACDs. They are not offered as part of the initial "get free CDs" promotion.
3) There is not a "SACD" section of the website. The only way you can find them is to do a search by "SACD" or "Hybrid" in the album title.
4) There is no information explaining what SACDs are or why someone would want them.
5) They only seem to carry hybrid SACDs.

Would like to hear what other people think of this.

Ga,
Sounds typical. The record club isn't there to hype a new technology; they're there to make a quick buck. Obviously they think some people will see an added value to an SACD, but for those who don't, they're not going to bother to educate them.

Reminds me of the "Borders" I was in recently. They have SACDs. They're mixed-in with the redbook CDs, with no other identification or explanation than what's on the cover of the package.

If you are a member already and have free coupons to use, you can use them toward SACDs though.

1) Yes this is my biggest problem with BMG in particular, but I am excited that they have some SACDs.

2) Actually, the 12-for-1 deal is currently split up into get 7 free, buy 1, get 4 free. Once you've signed up by picking the 7 disks, you're in the club, so the 4 free ones that come later have a larger selection available. I've selected "free" SACDs this way.

3) It is actually pretty easy to find the SACD this way, especially since there are so few. Much easier than Amazon who doesn't always have "SACD" in the title

4) I wouldn't really expect this.

5) I only buy hybrids, so not a problem. I can see the customer confusion if they sold SACD-only disks.

I posted this information a few months ago. I think it would still be possible for a person to get most of the Bob Dylan remasters-hybrid SACDs by joining the Columbia House club. I think you get 12 for signing up then are offered to place an additional order with your joining...I think there are 16 Dylan remasters so you could get 13 for free by joining at http://www.columbiahouse.com. If you sign up after being referred by a member-friend, the friend gets 5 free!

So if you want to, please email me privately and I'll refer you...

In the meantime, if you are already a member of one of these clubs, send an email to their customer service representative urging them to carry SACDs!
