Sean / threeandot,

I found your review of the Mch recording interesting... So I wasn't losing my mind (i.e. spatial discrimination) when I opined: "The pianist seems to be almost facing the listener, with the treble to the far left and the heavy strings to the right, while the violinist dominates centre stage." And now you say "The violin comes from the fronts in this second sonata in a warm and enveloping sound, the piano coming from all surround speakers.". I still find this down-the-middle-of-the-room placement intriguing; perhaps it made miking less problematic.

I would have to say that I notice this effect most prominently when I lay down and close my eyes. I preferred the Enescu sonata. Much more innovative. But yes, I notice this "in the middle of the room" effect. Very effective.

EYES WIDE CLOSED!
I quite agree on closed eyes; nothing detracts more from the illusion of a soundpace than seeing the actual room one is in. I'm surprised "high-end blindfolds" aren't marketed as the ultimate hi-fi tweak.

PROPER POSTURE?
On the other hand, I find that if I recline too far towards horizontal in my recliner chair, the sound illusion is dimished, so I need to remain more or less upright to get the full effect. Anyone else have comments on this?

I personally find lying down on my couch is the very best, even more than sitting in an upright posture, most of the time. Relaxation seems to be the key for me. Your mileage may vary.
