i just traced down this review which suggests that this disc may well be worth investigating. the MC mix is 4.0 apparently.

i would suggest hamelin on hyperion - it is fantastic and the sound is excellent

I would second nickc's advice. Although the Jacoby/Mackerras disc isn't bad, I don't like her interpretations of the Shostakovich pieces nearly as much as Hamelin's. I especially don't like her 1st concerto finale, where she uses unnecessary and distracting rubato that for me ruins the forward momentum the piece has to have. Hamelin really nails it, and I like Hyperion's sound and Litton's conducting better.

I agree that the Shostakovich is OK, but the Hamelin is far better. The clincher for me was that the Ustvolskaya is a relentlessly violent, dissonant and percussive piece, which left me battered and stressed. I have no desire to hear it again, even though I can appreciate that it might be a vivid impression of the desolation wreaked by the Great War or a cogent portrayal of life under the Soviets.
