"However there is one caveat with this SACD: It is one of the few discs which are Multi-ch ONLY. There is NO accompanying Hi-Rez Stereo Layer which means the disc will not play in Stereo SACD Players such as the Sony DVP-S9000ES and the like. Of course you can still play the RBCD layer for stereo, but that's probably not what you will want purchase this disc for."

Just a note to Arne and any others that feel compelled to use the review space to let everybody know that the disc is multichannel only ... the disc is clearly marked as "Multichannel" (not "Stereo/Multichannel") in the database here. There's only about two dozen such discs so you're generally pretty safe but a quick check before purchase will avoid surprises.

I can recall being chastised for suggesting years ago that one day the stereo SACD layer would disappear from these disks. I mused then that this would be a ploy to force those of us who remain dedicated two-channel listeners into spending the money to play back this sort of disk.

Thanks for the warning, Stephen.

"The Multi-ch presentation is very detailed and has a good sense of spaciousness."

So why has he given it 1 star for sound?

All the Eloquence SACDs are MC only.

Zeus's helpful post will not be read by all who look at this disc and the overall rating will be skewed unfavourably by Arne's opinion of the sound quality.
It would be helpful if the sound quality rating had included the letters MC since that is all we can judge it by.

Does anyone know if these recordings ever appeared in another multi-channel format?

I think that Arne should withdraw his "review" or at least correct his rating of the sonic quality. You can't praise the multi-channel presentation and then award it only half a point because there is no stereo layer.
Has anyone ever given a stereo-only SACD poor marks because it does not contain a multi-channel layer?

Totally agree. Even if I don't see this site as a promotion only site, this kind of review is really a lack of respect for the record company. It's like penalizing the performance because you don't like the music itself. Even if we all can disagree, please be true to yourself about the quality only, don't critcize a choice!

I recall reading somewhere that the multichannel tracks on these budget SACDs by Decca's Eloquence label were 'processed' rather than manually mixed. Can someone shed a light on this?

Perhaps not, but there are certainly enough grumblings on the subject here and at other online sites to choke a horse. Just the same, I suppose that there are a number of SACD MC enthusiasts out there who will NOT buy a recording that is stereo only.

i wouldn't. once i'd heard what well-mixed multichannel can do ANY kind of stereo seemed to me inevitably limited.

i still buy RBCDs, but mainly listen to them on my iPod.

yes - the mozart concerto disc explains (in german) that a process known as AMSI II was used to turn the stereo mix into 5.1.

it rather proudly claims that it DOESN"T use original multi-channel session tapes to do this, but works only from the stereo master, so that "no musical signals not in the original" (?!) are used in making the 5.1 signal.
