So, let's have a review of the Verklärte Nacht. Do you share Polly's opinion?

Since it just arrived, I haven't heard it yet. First, I'm likely to listen to Siegfried first (although given the time of year, I'm heavy in Bach Passions-really like the Channel Classics St. John Passion, and Parsifal right now-listening to Domingo/Thieleman after listening to the Muck Bayreuth set - not that Parsifal is particularly Christian, but there are elements), and secondly, I am not that knowledgable about the Schoenberg repetory-he has never seemed to me to be a compelling composer. So this might not be top of the list review wise (I certainly can do another Siegfried review - while this is not a typical view, I love Siegfried, find it to be the strongest Ring opera along with Rheingold, and also own the Keilberth, Solti, Karajan and Haitink.) Personally, I have come to find Stolze to be a brilliant Mime, but....

I could also do a Fidelio review - recently received the Davis LSO Live, and have some views (Brewer is a superior Leonore, Davis does a wonderful job conducting, orchestra is very much in the forefront, and the rest of the cast ranges from good/OK to forgettable. While the consensus view is for Klemperer (either the studio or the live recording on Testament - and Vickers is clearly the best Florestan on record), try the Fricsay recording as well -far more vital.
