First post. Did a search to no avail.

I have an SACD/DVD Audio player (Marantz DV8400). I have only the analog connectors connected to my Marantz SR8200--not the optical. I am using the 7.1 direct source selection on the reciever.

It sounds great, but am I getting the 96kHz sound through this connection or does it have to be digital?

Of course, the PCM and 96kHz indicators on the reciever are not lighting because, I assume, this is a digital-only feature.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

You don't get 96kHz sound through the analog connection, you get analog sound (which has no sample rate) :-) Whether the player reads the 96kHz audio track depends on what you choose in the player setup.

If you connect the player and receiver with the digital (optical) cable, the succesful transmission of a 96kHz PCM signal depends on several factors:

- the DVD must have 96kHz sound. Most music DVDs only have a 48kHz signal. Some examples of DVDs with 96kHz sound are the sound-only DAD discs by Classic Records

- the player must be able to output a 96kHz digital signal. I suppose the Marantz does, but you should check the manual

- the DVD disc (with 96kHz sound) must allow 96kHz digital output. Some discs are copyprotected and force the player to mute the digital output if the 96kHz track is selected. Only 48kHz (the standard DVD resolution) can be passed through the digital output in that case

- the receiver must accept a 96kHz digital signal. Because your Marantz has a 96kHz indicator, this should be the case.

- the digital cable must be able to transmit a 96kHz signal. Some poor quality or very long cables have problems with that, but normally it should work.

Good luck
