I've just read the recent member review of this recording. I'll admit that prior to reading this I really had no intention of buying it since I was quite disappointed in Zinman's Titan. That, and the fact that I already own at least a dozen others in the various formats -- including the highly overrated Fischer. Now I'm not so sure. This review was objective enough to provide ample discussion of both the sonic and performance aspects, I thought.

What interests me is, though, that about half of the review assessments are negative, and I'm wondering on what basis these were made.

FYI - I am actually a big fan of the Fischer M2. If you are considering purchasing the Zinman M2 because of my review, you might consider waiting for a second person's review. I point this out because we all have different performance preferences. My enjoyment of the Fischer may or may not bode well for your enjoyment of the Zinman.

Scott

PS - I have not heard the Zinman M1, but should receive it in the mail in the next few days.

I'm in exactly the same boat as sgb. Wasn't thrilled with the Fischer, didn't like the Zinman Titan. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it, and anyone else - can never have too many opinions!

Talking about the Titan I just got the new Jansons/RCO last night and played it through once.
Performance excellent and the sound, although seemingly "only" 88.2khz was amazing (fairly close in). I don't even have a subwoofer and I could feel the bass in my chest- love that Concertgebouw acoustic!
Cheers
Nick

Is it in 4 channel (like Symphony 1) or 5? I was disappointed in the missing centre channel in No.1.

Well, there's a decided difference between saying that a recording is overrated (as I did re the Fischer M2), than saying something is not particularly good (as in my comments about the Zinman M1). I certainly enjoy the Fischer as you do, but I am not prepared to say that it announces the second coming as so many others have. The Urlicht certainly passes my own standards, so it is not likely that I would be deleting it from my collection any time soon.

The point remains that many of the jackals who do so much of the review assessments here assigned negatives to your review, Scott, and that has me scratching my head in disbelief.

I think it owes to the comparisons. They are not the most impressive Mahler seconds in the catalogue.

Would someone who has received this please comment on whether it is recorded with a center channel.

Thanks,
Tom

No doubt others may not share my enthusiasm of the other listed M2's in my review. One reason that I listed them all is so that someone can better see my preferences.

BTW, I revisited the first movement a couple of weeks ago and am now questioning the multi-channel sound quality. After ensuring that my 2 year old son's button-pushing, knob-turning fetish was not adversely affecting the sound, I noticed that the first movement still sounded rather flat and two-dimensional eventhough the lower frequencies were "reinstated". It is especially bad in the louder, more complicated passages. The softer passages seemed to have very good ambiance and clarity. So it's as if the ambiance and air is sucked out as the music gets louder. I have not had a chance to relisten to the rest of the symphony to date (too many backlogged new recording purchases). As a comparison, the mulit-channel sound on the Zinman M1 seems to leap from my speakers during the tuttis.

Is there a center channel present?

Thanks,
Tom

No, there is no center channel. I think this recording has excellent sound, nonetheless.
