looks like a purchase! my only don quixote is the DG MC mehta/maisky version.

the sound is a bit up-front and aggressive for my taste, and i don't warm to maisky's rather over-wrought, febrile playing.

i wonder is the sound on this sony SACD better?

just taken delivery of this. initial impressions very positive.

i notice the recordings date back to 2003. i wonder does this mean that further dresden/luisi strauss has already been recorded?

The JPC link says that the media is CD while the description of the homepage says it is a hybrid. I wonder since other SACD are listed as SACD and not CD.

Is this recording released as a CD only as well?

Hi Terence,
I bought this as soon as it appeared, as it is one of my favourite pieces; I think it probably is one of Strauss' greatest masterpieces, and a stunning piece of musical story-telling. It is indeed in MC 5.0. The recording of the cello pieces is good, with standard use of the centre channel, but the centre in the Quixote is used more for ambience than to fill in the details of the orchestra; quite a bit of hiss can be heard from the centre's tweeter. I was very disappointed with both performance and recording from the start, I found it curiously uninvolving, and I couldn't relax and get revel in the music because of the recording. There certainly some "air" from the hall, but it seems to me that the front-back perspective simply doesn't sound natural and I can't place the seating plan as one can easily do with the best recordings. I get no sense that the orchestra exists behind the speakers; the focus is rather narrow and squeezed in between them. Solo instruments like the oboe and harp pop up in their own box of slight reverberation but sound as if they are at the front of the orchestra, so everyone seems to be sitting on each other's laps in a row of about a dozen seats. Climaxes don't open up thrillingly, there is just a wall of sound. The best stereo CD recordings make the episode with the sheep both hilarious and sonically amazing, and you can really feel as if you are in the middle of a terrified flock - if anything is crying out for surround sound, this would be it (the purists would hate it). Instead, the excellent Dresdeners, so valiant and inspired on their other recordings, sound merely dutiful. And at the end, where I usually am deeply moved and in tears at Quixote's dying eloquence, I am merely respectful.
Usually I would have had this disc on many times in the months that I have had it. Instead I bring it out from time to time just to check if I got it wrong and it really is wonderful, only sadly to put it back. So I have been loth to try the Dresden Heldenleben, despite its re-pressing.

Cheers,
John

Amazon says this album will be released on Nov. 11. I'm interested, but I would like to confirm that it is indeed a Hybrid SACD with the cd layer as well as Stereo 2.0 SACD layer too. I listen in 2.0 SACD, but want a cd layer as future backup (should SACD players disappear from the world).

Well my copy is fine.
Hybrid..CD,stereo hi rez and surround.
It also states so on tne bottom right rear of the box.It also plays three ways.
Im more concerned about being struck by lightening than sacd players going broke. If someone can make a profit from making them, then they will exist.
Though I have NO confidence in any help from Sony.
ps Ive had my copy over a year ?
