I just bought the Respighi SA-CD from MDG.Obviously it does not contain a DSD 2 channel track as it is standard in the SA-CD format, but only PCM 2ch and DSD 6ch. Since the recording is 2+2+2 it is true that with a multichannel player hooked up to a stereo set the two lower front channels can be used as stereo L/R so that no additional stereo track is needed in that case.
A stereo only SA-CD player however will not read the mch track at all also not only two channels of it.
This means with a stereo SA-CD player one can play the CD track only !
I dont think this right at all and i strongly suspect that this goes against SA-CD specifications. (remember the argument that SA-CD had a dedicated studio made stereo mix in any case as oposed to DVD-A ?)

Dear mdt,
actually I don't have any of the MDG SACDs yet.
You can direct your question directly to Mr. Werner Dabringhaus at info@mdg.de.

Kind regards.

Really? Is there some labelling that specifies this or did you determine this solely by trying to select Stereo on your player? If so this would be a big mistake on MDG's part, let alone trying to shoehorn 2+2+2 into a 5.1 world.

You really got 'em goin on this one over at the Asylum. I do however think a dedicated 2 channel stereo track is part of the SACD spec. I'll try to dig up that info and maybe you could do the same.

From the Sony site at the included URL:

The extraordinary experience of Super Audio CD doesn't stop at stereo. Multi-channel discs deliver the full warmth and resolution of Super Audio CD on up to 5.1 channels. And each multi-channel disc also includes a separate two-channel version of the music, for complete compatibility with two-channel Super Audio CD players.

Khorn,

The stereo folder has to be present, but it can be empty.

What is more puzzling in the original post, is that it refers to a PCM stereo group, which I didn't think was possible.

I'm really curious about this one

Best

Help! I have been looking forward to buying this disc. Will someone please explain whether it will play in MC surround ( PCM or DSD ) on my Sony 777es player or not?

When playing it on the (mch capable)player at the record shop the display showed "mch only" when trying to switch to stereo, so obviously the headphones simply reproduced the two lower front channels of the 2+2+2 mix.
Since i was of the oppinion that an SA-CD ALLWAYS had a DSD stero track i thought the player might be at fault and still bought the disc.
When at home my stereo player showed the text "TOC error" when switching from PCM to DSD and didn't play back the DSD layer at all.
From this i made the conclusions i posted.
The labelling by the way stated the following:

Playable: CD stereo
DVD-V stereo
SACD,DVD-V/A stereo,5.1,2+2+2

If that is a mch capable player it will playback the 2+2+2 DSD track. You can listen to this in surround with the equivilant set up. Because of the specific propertys of 2+2+2 you can get an original stereo signal by using only the according two channels of the 2+2+2 track. It is called 2+2+2 and not 6.0 because the miking is so that from the 6 channels you have 2 genuine stereo channels or 4(2+2) for Quadro or 6 (2+2+2)for full surround.
The CD layer is playable by any SACD or CD player.
