Didn't someone ask recently about DTS discs?

I think you mean this thread: http://www.ps3sacd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14

Must give it a lash. However I have another HDCD that I'd forgotten about -Barb Jungr sings Dylan- which I just stuck in and I have to say, I've never heard it so good. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact that it's a Linn (HD)CD and their recordings of people going shopping would sound good.

Yey, another Linn fan. I bought their Sampler vol 1 and was blown away. Within month I owned 3 more of their discs. Great work Linn! They also offer a "master quality" download service that, if I find an album that I really want, I will try to compare it to sound of a SACD. Should be interesting.

Incidentally, I ripped the Dire Straits HDCD onto the PS3 (MP3 format at 320kps - highest that the PS3 affords). Very impressive. Did not do a direct comparison to the CD. The playback shows 48kHz sampling when playing back (FWIW).

Check out the Linn SA-CD "Waterloo Sunset" by Barb Jungr. Track 5 is the one, 'The Great Valerio' a song by Richard Thompson. The violin heralds an instrumental break in the middle in which Linn demonstrate all they know about recording, dynamics and the joy of SA-CD.

For those who have tried the analog out from the PS3, is the sound any good or is it just an afterthought?

BTW I've found a way to listen to stereo DVD-Audio through the PS3 by streaming ripped 24/192 lossless files with TVersity. I believe the sound should be the same as playing an actual disc but I have no way to tell.

Is this possible with PC's DVD-rom drive, or does it require a DVD-A player???

Agreed, I connected the line level output to my headphone amp today and I'm floored by the excellent sound quality.

Anybody else have a background noise issue with the PS3? I hear a slight buzzing or humming that goes away when there something is playing but returns when I'm at the menu.

Yes, I had a similar issue, i.e. distortion with soem bassy or high-volume music. THsi was due to the default PS3 sound volume set to +2. The volume ranges from -2 to +2 in integer increments. So set it to zero and enjoy. At least I hope that's your problem.
FM.

P.S. I listen to PS3 via receiver connected with HDMI.
