As far as I've read the fan noise is actually extremely low (especially compared to Xbox360 and of course PCs with similar capabilities).

The PCM resolution used supposedly is 176.4 kHz (4x44.1) which sound promising. I hope however they'll release a software update to let it output DSD via HDMI.

I think the "fan noise" would put off a lot audiophiles
compared to the silent mechanism of a dedicated player
and if in fact the SACD DSD signal is converted to PCM then Analog... that would be another issue..
although i have it set up in the family room and ambient noise actually blocks out the fan
I have noticed the CD playback is quite good.. you have the option to change the output frequency
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/outputfrequency.html
I will be looking forward to these "dampening instructions" and see if they work...

I've used the PS3 quite a bit now for SACD playback, and it's actually quite good. It delivers a very warm, airy presentation with quite a lot of depth and detail. I have been pleasantly surprised by it's performance as an SA-CD player. Also, the cooling fans in the PS3 are very quiet, with most of the system cooling being handled by internal cooling fins. Fan noise is not noticeable with the console in my rack.

Currently, I'm using the analog 2-channel outputs directly from the PS3. Monster Cable makes a multi-AV to RCA cable set for the PS3, and it works well. Granted, it's a specialized connector setup, so traditional RCA-to-RCA analog cables can't be used.

Since the PS3 doesn't offer multichannel analog outputs, HDMI offers the only route to multichannel SACD playback. I'm holding off on buying a receiver with HDMI inputs until some are available with Dolby True HD and DTS Master decoders are built in, so I haven't tried SACD multichannel with the PS3 yet. 2 channel playback sounds excellent though.

Apparently the audio capabilities of the PS3 will be discussed in Sans Francisco tomorrow evening at an AES function.. attending will be Ken Felton, Sound Design Manager for the PlayStation 3, Clink Bajakian, Music Director of SCEA and Greg deBeer, the Dialog Manager for SCEA Sound..

It would be interesting to find out if the signal from the multi AV is DSD to analog

Wow, I'd love to be there for the discussion. I would at least like to feed them some questions to answer though about the PS3's true SACD playback process. I'd love to see a multi-channel SACD option appear for the PS3's multi-a/v out connection, since I don't have an HDMI equipped receiver, but I doubt it's possible. The multi-a/v out connection is a carryover from the PS2, so I don't think it can deliver more than 2-channel sound.

I would have gone, had I been a little bit closer. I would have asked them about their motivation for converting DSD to (hi-res) PCM before sending it to the HDMI output and any future plans for actual DSD output on HDMI (which v1.3 would support).

Hopefully, a later PS3 firmware update will allow for full DSD distribution via the HDMI connection. It's entirely possible Sony would enable full DSD playback since they're fully committed to both the PS3 and SACD format.

On a positive note, the latest firmware release, version 1.80, comes out tomorrow, and it offers full 1080p upscaling of DVDs, as well as PS1 and PS2 games. This is a huge upgrade, and I cannot wait to download it.

I hope the same. This Japanese press release gives a long list of feature upgrades but the only thing it mentions about Super Audio CD is that 'Bit Mapping' is added to the music settings. Not sure what to make of that. The only thing I can think of is they've implemented Direct SBM, which is all about DSD-to-PCM conversion, so still no direct DSD output.

you beat me to it The Seventh Taylor .... downloaded the upgrade yesterday and trying to make head from tale of it.. as Super Bit Mapping Direct refers to the downconversion of DST 1-bit to 16bit PCM for CD.
I'm guessing because the DST i-bit signal is converted to a higher bit rate PCM signal, this is some type of feature to minimise "dither ringing."
What throiws me is the selection is either "off" or "type 1" meaning other types in future

shame zeus can't invite those gentlemen from SF AES and SCEA to this forum.. they would have have been quizzed

the biggest issue is DTS HD Master with the HT crew.... I'm sure they were asked when or if that will be incorporated.

Thanks, azure, for shedding some light on this.

What still shocks me is I could only find details of the audio aspects of the feature upgrade on Japanese websites. There are dozens of American websites covering the upgrade but they only contain superficial information about the video upscaling and PSP link -- nothing about audio.

Bang goes my space invaders machine...
