I have the impression that the SACD is losing against DVD-audio.

Major releases in the US are now solely done in the DVD-audio format.
The doors - 40th anniversary
The Beatles - Love
Donald Fagen - Morph The Cat
Neil Young - Live at Fillmore East
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
and others

The remasters of Depeche Mode are sold in the US without SACD....

I hope, my impression is not correct.

It's time for some damn good releases on SACD.

This is an interesting point because I do not see many DVD-As around. But you have prompted a little thought from me - if one has to think in terms of winning or losing, then probably the whole music industry is losing against downloadable/CD-less music. However, what is important is a music format that suits a listener's preference. The choices for those who value quality may be different from those who value convenience or accessibility, but ultimately, it is a matter of personal choice.

For sometime now, I have had the opposite impression. How many recordings of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto are on DVD-A? We have 3 excellent ones from one label on SACD, plus a bunch of others from diverse labels.

How many recordings of Cesare Frank's Symphony in D minor are on DVD-A? How many recordings of Bartok String Quartets, how many of Shostakovitch's Symphonies, of his violin concerto are on DVD-A. How many Beethoven Symphony sets are either complete or currently underway? How many complete Mahler Symphonies are there in DVD-A or in completion? Sibelius? How many Mozart Violin Concerto sets are in DVD-A? We have two stupendously wonderful ones on SACD.

Actually I have found DVD-A to be a "non-starter". There is not enough good stuff for me to bother with it right now. Universal hasn't released the Prokofiev symphonies with the LSO and Gergiev as SACD. If they did that on DVD-A, I might have to do a rethink.

As for pop music, that's under my radar screen.

SACD won't ever be a product for the masses, but it has got a well consolidated niche market now.

Hope the launch of the new playstation 3 will change this a little bit. This toy has an SACD reader on board.

Actually everything I've read so far, and that is a lot, shows that selling numbers have been a lot bigger for SACD than DVD audio from the beginning, and DVD audio has always been in a real crisis.

There are many great music releases and recordings for SACD, which is unfortunately not the case for DVD audio (still a great format with not yet exploited potential), and the few examples you pointed at show the concern of DVD audio from the start to beat SACD with less "audiophiles" and more commercial releases, and proving thus even more their failure, since most people, which are the people commercial releases make profit from, don't care that much about great sound and even listen to mp3. They did not understand how much most people didn't care about good sound quality, and since it was supposed to be a war about great sound, the musical choices SACD made were a lot more appropriate for audiophiles, who were of course the real targets for this new market.

Anyway, we should focus more on better sound, and this is more a recording quality and format matter. I mean, the disc itself is quite about the same!

The Love album by the Beatles is nothing more than a mishmash of bits and pieces with some songs complete, but mostly a best of album with interesting little remasterings. However, that does not make a real effort to make the Beatles albums into DVD-Audio as much as some people out there would like to make it so.
