Disc just arrived from Amazon.fr. Redbook is advertised as 2 CDs, and I’ve checked track by track listings on amazon and this is just 1 SACD selection of what’s on a redbook CDs.

I look forward to your review. This looks like a great disc (note the singular). Thanks for the update.

hi beardawgs
is this stereo or multichannel? that is the only crucial question for me.

Stereo and 4.0 multichannel. The notes say they portrayed the peculiar arrangement of the 2 instrumental and 2 vocal ensembles in the multichannel mix. The recording is PCM 96/24.

Haven't had a chance to have a listen, though.

Posting a review today for this magnificent disc, I saw a note in a review by nickc saying: “Voices come from the front and the two orchestras are on each side, sometimes calling and answering to each other. The effect is magical!”. Couldn’t help noticing that quite a while ago same reviewer thought of such an effect as trivial in his review of Channel Classics Christmas Oratorio: “maybe jared sacks could have put the echo in the echo aria in one of the rear speakers but it is fairly trivial in the scheme of things”.

Now, I’m a bit confused here – when Channel Classics ignores something that’s in composer’s view important for the performance - it’s trivial, but when Opus 111 respects composer’s vision to the letter - it’s magical. And I’m yet to hear a ‘magical’ production from CC.

I feel similarly. I really like Channel, and have many of their SA-CDs, but there aren't many I would point to as magical productions. In particular, the acclaim for the Christmas Oratorio's sonics seems a little overstated (as I've noted before in comparing it to two HM Bach vocal SA-CDs). I think the best claim Channel has of magical production (for Early Music, that is) might be the excellent Florilegium recordings. Can't wait for the new Bolivian Baroque - Florilegium.

Regarding the Vivaldi disc under discussion, I must say that its tremendous quality makes it all the greater a shame that it is only an "Extracts" version, and a shame that none of the other titles in the Vivaldi Edition (or anything at all from Opus 111) have been released on SA-CD.

Hi Beardawgs
The reason I differentiated between the two was that the whole Vivaldi disc is set up with orchestras to the sides. I think you've misunderstood what I meant by trivial in the Bach review. In the Channel Christmas Oratorio it is 5 minutes out of approximately two hours worth of music; I meant trivial in that sense. I would much prefer a well played and recorded disc with the echo incorrectly done than a boring, indifferently recorded disc with the echo coming from somewhere yonder.
Anyway, reading back I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination call that review one of my finest!
Cheers
Nick

Hi Lyle
I too can't wait for the new Florilegium disc to be released. I don't know whether you have it but the Harmonia Mundi disc with Andrew Lawrence-King and the Harp Consort called "Missa Mexicana" is fantastic in the same vein (though, once again looking back on my earlier reviews I cringe to see they are pretty threadbare!).
Cheers
Nick
