Thread: SACD Defect?

I bought the RCA Living Stereo disc of Bartok with Reiner/CSO last year. Since that time it seemed to exhibit the signs of CD rot or delamination. The disc continued to play, but oddly, the disc exhibited signs of CD rot or, what I think was more likely, delamination the way some DVD's do. It started on the outer edge and worked it's way to the inner part of the disc. It only spread a millimetre or two, so it was small, but my wife and I agreed that it was spreading. There was also another spot which was considerably smaller still that was starting up as well.

I do hope that this is an isolated incident. It was pressed by BMG before the Sony BMG Music merger. Anyone else noticed this?

I would find it hard to believe that the same problems that Philips Dupont Optical were experiencing, could possibly be happening again. In the 1990's Philips were using a certain adhesive in their discs which interacted with certain chemicals in the booklets. Thus, the "rot" would set in.

However, I have no idea if this is the same problem here. I actually returned the disc to the store and the guy (who runs his own shop!) allowed me to exchange the disc. I am re-ordering the Bartok as it is a great disc and the first Classical disc I ever bought for my SACD player that was really good! Before that I just had the "Dark Side of the Moon" and the Naxos Tallis disc which was a major disappointment.

Is it something like this? I posted a thread to talk about this subject some time ago.

/showthread/10204/10204/y#10204

It seems to be a problem caused by the glue that sticks the layers of hybrid discs. Nevertheless, the fault of my SACD hasn't grown since I found it, so I no longer worry about it.

Best regards,

I would say in my case, the disc could have continued to work, but I have returned it and I am going to get a replacement.

I hope this adhesive problem is the exception and not the rule.

Thanks
