I have both the gold CD and the SACD of this recording, but have not yet listened to the SACD. I hope to this weekend and will add my 2 cents worth here. Even if not satisfied with the surround sound, the stereo layer must be an improvement on what many people consider to be the greatest jazz recording of all time.

I recently did a (stereo) comparision between the SACD (european single leayer version) and the SBM-remastered Mastersound CD from 1992 (now OOP).

Both sound very different! Both are speed-corrected compared to the previous reissues on which the first side ran at a faster speed, but the SACD has been remixed from the 3-track tapes.

The SACD sounds dryer, while the CD has some reverb (which is probably artificial).

The CD has a much stronger bass and sounds warmer, the horns sound fuller.

My conclusion is that the SACD sounds more analytical and the SACD more "sensual". Both sound great. Which one you prefer is a question of taste and of your system.

What about tape hiss, especially in "Blue in Green"? What bothers me of the CD is the how bothersome the hiss is when listening at moderate sound levels.
