I think you're onto something, but I don't think it has to do with Kunzel in in the past. It seems to be more of a recent development.

Past Kunzel/film music recordings have often been more exciting than the original soundtrack albums, but his recent "Epics" sounded to me like what you describe above: deflated, uninteresting, etc.
