Need a couple recommendations for Latin Jazz along the lines of the Concord Sampler - Tania Maria / Mongo Santamaria. Need something that cooks.

Being a Blues vs. Jazz devotee, I am cautious about my SACD Jazz purchases. Some are not too my liking - too much jazz guitar or reeds. I prefer more of the piano Jazz combos that drift towards blues. I picked up the Gene Harris SACD Listen Here - very nice feel to it. It may sound strange, but I wanted to play Allman Brothers or Can't You Here Me Knockin' right after it - great grooves! Any suggestions for other jazz SACD's that lean toward the blues?

For Latin Jazz, try Paquito d"Rivera Tropicana Nights on Chesky. Hot!

I can highly recommend the Conga Blue from Poncho Sanchez (also on Concord) where Mongo Santamaria is guest player on some titles....

Cheers, Tjobbe

Bluesy jazz-sounds like an oxymoron. I think of blues as B.B. King or Mighty Sam McClain. It's blues, not jazz. Hard to think of what you mean (but I don't know the Gene Harris stuff). If you like vocals, try Patricia Barber-maybe that would be the ticket.

Thanks for the recommendation. Placed an order for used SACD on Amazon after listening to some samples. Awesome tracks.

If you looked bluesy jazz up in the dictionary there would be a picture of "Midnight Blue" by Kenny Burrell next to the definition.

My thoughts exactly, although it's heavy on the guitar - which OP isn't too keen on. Stunning music though.

Kenny Burrell: Midnight Blue
