Discussion: Battalia! - Tibicines

I had something like this, years ago, and enjoyed it immensely. It's been on my wishlist for months and, wondering just now what my next move in the game of SACD chess would be, I've ordered it. I quote below part of a review from classicalcdreview.com:

"It's a delight to listen to, replete with battle fanfares and musical depiction of scenes of warfare. The final track is a five-minute "real baroque battle in surround sound" which is an audiophile's delight. It vividly captures space and presence and effectively makes use of the multi-channel idiom. The listener is in the center of the "battle" and explosive sounds of guns and cannons is captured with remarkable impact—the wide dynamic range is highly effective..." R. Benson

Battalia has arrived! This is the MOST SONIC disc I've ever owned (yes, it is rather resonant). It's almost enough to make me wish I were set up for surround, but I am quite surrounded, as is, with 2 channels. Sackbutts on stun, what a giggle!!! (Yes it's a three-exclamation-point disc).

My enjoyment is marred only by the discovery that I ordered it TWICE... (and you said I wasn't senile). Anybody else got any dupes and interested in a trade?

I am underwhelmed by the offers of trades. Peter and I examined several options, and I am choosing the "Send it back to Amazon for Refund" path. You missed a good one, music-heads.

Thank you Hugo for your review. I would just like to add that this disc will be of interest for more than 'historical' reasons.

Hysterical is perhaps the word. I greeted the cellist/wife with it last Saturday evening (3/4 volume, of course) -- and sure enough she started to chuckle and giggle (she especially liked the "fuzzy" saggbutts). This disc has mind-altering qualities... like y'know man? like WOW!

I listened to the multi-channel version - only to discover that one of the rear channels (on the right) is missing! Has anyone else noticed this problem (the same as in the LSO Kullervo SACD)? And how can such a thing happen? It may be forgivable in a recording where the rear channels are only used to provide ambience, but not in "a real baroque battle in surround sound" where each channel is equally important.
