During this month Pentatone will finish the "release planning" list. The revised list will be in their main site in the first day of October.
But, where is the remastered recording of Handel's "Messiah" (London Philharmonic Orchestra, Karl Richter)? Do you have any ideas? The little advertisement booklet - which arrives with the each disc - tells that it will be available in this year.

What a great disappointment! I sent email to Pentatone and they answered:
"As already told before, not all the tapes were preserved well enough to be used for remastering. This also was a disappointment for us because we were planning to release more items.
Second reason is that we can’t decide on our own which recordings will be remastered. We only received permission and tapes from Deutsche Grammophon for several recordings, not the full repertoire. So unfortunately there is nothing more we can release.
I hope you understand the situation. Sorry to make you and probably more customers disappointed. On the other hand we should all be grateful that we were able to re-release 20 pieces of these valuable recordings from the past!"
And I hoped that they could released Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades" (Rostropovich), Weber's "Der Freischutz" (Kleiber) and Verdi's "Rigoletto" (Giulini)... What a great disappointment, indeed. :(
Only this one Weber: Der Freischütz - Davis is available SACD recording of the work. It isn't actually very impressive. Kleiber's legendary approach is much better and I really hoped that it would be available in REMASTERED CLASSICS. The 4.0 surround sound - Bizet: Carmen - Bernstein & Berlioz: La Damnation de Faust - Ozawa - really waked these famous stories into full bloom!

Indeed a great disappointment. I will never understand Universal's release policy. What a lack of judgement!! Seems that we have to say goodbye to Kleiber's Freischütz and other great recordings on SACD.

Yes, absolutely! The recording [Weber's "Der Freischütz"] contains many impressive sound effects, such as off-stage discussions, gun shots, demonic laughs, tower bell strikes etc. I think that it was really recorded on quad. In Kleiber's hands the Romantic masterpiece got the new outlook.

Now this text is almost humorous: "Over the next few years, PENTATONE is planning to release additional albums in the series REMASTERED CLASSICS. All the quadraphonic tapes from the 'sixties [there aren't any albums of that era], 'seventies, and early 'eighties will be carefully screened, and their condition and quality well affect the release planning. For any updates on the planning, please visit our website www.pentatonemusic.com".
How it is possible that we have almost 80 albums in the RQR (Remastered Quadro Recordings) Series - which contains the remastered quadraphonic recordings of Philips Classics - but only 20 albums in the REMASTERED CLASSICS? This doesn't make sense, I cannot understand it.

Probably Universal cancelled the promised licence for the remastering. Maybe we will see these recordings as LPs or download or blu-ray or what ever. And nobody will buy them - or maybe they will rot in the archives.

Pentatone´s release planning list now refreshed: Still no new releases in the remastered classics series. - But some interesting new releases of the well-known war-horses, Tschaikowsky, Grieg and Dvorak.
Anyone here who knows the conductor Andres Orozco-Estrada ?

PENTATONE wrote to me: "The first bunch of the Remastered Classics series is completed. We don’t know if a new bunch one will follow, but as told before we are doing our best to make this happen. We requested the licence for appr 15 new items at Deutsche Grammophon. The bad news is that we still have no idea when and if we will get these licences. We are totally depending on their approval and can’t make any predictions about the outcome.
That is why we for now only can say, please check our release planning regularly. As soon as we have the green light, the planning will be adjusted".
Well, we have still hope! Remember [these records might be a part of the license list, I'm not sure]: Weber's "Der Freischütz" (Kleiber, 1972), Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades" (Rostropovich), Verdi's "Rigoletto" (Giulini, 1979) etc.
I'm looking forward to "pick up" the next bouquet!
