I will consider DSD downloads when/if there is a multichannel DAC available at a reasonable price.

Is this reasonable enough? http://www.minidsp.com/products/usb-audio-interface/u-dac8 Yes, I know it is PCM-only but how else can you implement adjustments for bass management, speaker level/distance and, even, EQ?

Oh my, are you a tone control guy, Kal? You'll feel better if you come out of the closet on this. :-)

Where have you been? I have been a vocal advocate of roomEQ for years.

I don't understand all the fuss over DAC's, when this will do what you require via USB: http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/blu-ray-disc-players/bdp-s7200
Read the specification section that defines playable file types on page 41 of the user manual, downloadable from here: http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/BDP-S7200#Manuals
... and you'll understand what I'm on about.
If you're in North America, the Sony BDP-S6500 will do the same, which is play 2-channel or multi-channel .dff/.dsf files via USB port.
Much cheaper alternatives to expensive DAC's.

Understood. I have used my Oppos in similar ways. However, the ability to play these formats via USB is usually restricted to playing from a directly-connected drive. It is not clear to me from the manual if the Sony is any different in this matter.
As for the network connection of a disc player, that usually works best with the player initiating/controlling the file-play and that means using the player's app/GUI. Can one stream MCH from a server (not just stereo) to the Sony?

Yes, the Oppo 103 and 105 disc players are a fine way to enjoy Multichannel DSD at a very affordable price. And these players are already in many homes.

10-4 on that, so I assume then your reference to equalization is limited to compensation for listening room issues, although you do slso mention bass conrol. Superfluity does not vitiate, I suppose.

WRT p.1, be mindful of the footnotes on that page.
WRT p2, I'll test that functionality when my BDP-S7200 arrives; at this point I'm not sure. I've recently evaluated JRiver Media Centre 20 as a DLNA server. It failed, because my Home Cinema is on a different subnet from MC20 server. MC20 will not traverse subnets.
I plan to test foobar2000 for this functionality when I get the time, as it's now my default media player. MC20 has went away.

Be mindful of the fact that this Oppo functionality was added after the fact; at least 1-2 years after initial release of those machines.
WRT the Sony BDP-S6200, BDP-S7200 from 2014 and the current BDP-S6500, this intrinsic functionality is part of their initial design phase. Therefore, they should be more stable with faster operation due to their dual-core processors.
All Sony machines listed, have excellent build quality. You don't always get what you pay for here. Less IS more; Caveat Emptor!
