.... and I wonder how many are still working? Regards.

My first player, a Sony, was bought 2004 and is still in good shape.

Agreed for single layer players. I was observing complaints/experiences with multilevel players, like Denon 2900 and 3930 players I had/have. However, my 1940 and 2910 are working fine. Something amiss somewhere, maybe? Regards.

SACD media spec's exceed the capabilities of the $20 laser hardware?

$20 DVD drives can both read and write SACD spec DVD data at 8X overspeeds, perfectly.

Yes, this can happen. But it all depends on the quality control from the factories in China. Just ask any cd/dvd repairman.

... I'm sure all can, ......... but for how long, and with what margins? Regards.

It might come as a surprise, but even $20000 "transports" use mass market drive units, with a fancy drawer faceplates. Nobody makes "high end" SACD/DVD readers, only puts them into fancy boxes and charges $19980 for the box.

Surely not! :)

AmonRa this doesn't look like a $20 drive to me. http://www.kaplanhtdesign.com/Esoteric_Transports.html

A DVD drive can read and write DSD data with the right software, however it needs a DSD DAC or software to convert DSD to PCM to play it. This is called a DSD-disc.

The DSD layer of an SACD cannot be read by a standard DVD drive, it has to be modified to recognize the SACD recognition code and copy protection codes which can only be incorporated into the drive by paying for a license from Sony/Philips as it is proprietary. If you put a hybrid SACD in a DVD drive it will play the CD layer. If you put a single-layer SACD in a DVD-drive it will eject it.

I guess we are about to be amazed... maybe these are CNC'd and hand assembled by trained apes working for peanuts?

You must admit $20 will buy a chunk of these.
