I am sure about: I don't know a place where skepticism is as popular as in France (I am French). It's true for SACD, and also I see it here in China (where I live) with lots of French companies that didn't believe in the Chinese market till the late 90s, as German and American companies had been florishing for many years...

I'm surprised by this. I've been working in this industry for years and I do know that France was the country that picked up DVD-Video first and fastest. Also the penetration of LaserDisc players in France was far higher than anywhere else in Europe.

Mr. Michellon, haven't you seen the forthcoming Sony SACD player?

Maybe I was not precize enough in my previous post.

I know that this new forthcoming player has been announced by Sony. I also asked about it as the 3000 and 9000 were not available anymore. It seems the player might not see the day in France.

So the only options to listen to SACD would now be :

- Pioneer DVD players
- Marantz and Denon (SA)CD players
- Sony all-in box systems or low budget players
- Sony's Playstation 3
- High end players

Finding (SA)CD players becomes more and more difficult. Same thing for the softs (Internet is now the only way to get them if you're looking for something else than classic music).

Besides the Denon players (1500AE and 2000AE), which are sold in specialized stores, you will have hard times to listen or see one of them on the shelves.

Two days ago I ordered the new Marantz SA7001 Ki and believe me or not, I had to make an amazing number of calls until I could find one.

I really think French music lovers are a bit frustrated. Indeed we have a large number of early adopters when it comes to sound and video. But somehow, stores, Sony and the press didn't make enough efforts to promote SACD. Each time I saw a demo in stores (back in 2005), it was always done on a Sony 5.1 all-in one box. Too bad ! Articles in the press have not always been very positive and look at the prices ! 25 to 32 euros for one disc !!! How can they expect to sell anything ?

Finally, I wonder if it's really only a French issue. Look at all these editors who stopped editing new SACDs (especially in Jazz and Rock / Pop). I do believe that SACD is not only for classic music and I like all kind of musics. Unfortunately, editors seem not to think like me :(

... and many other universal disc players from Onkyo, Cambridge Audio, Linn, Yamaha, Nad, Harman/Kardon, etc.... and some cheap universal DVD players from Oppo, Sigmatek and Cyberhome.

Internet is the best/cheapest way to get SACDs. Super Audio CD is a niche market product.

The Marantz SA-7S1 would be quite useless to me. It's stereo only.

For more coverage, see http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20060825/marantz1.htm
and http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20060906/marantz2.htm

It's a machine for stereophiles. Besides, there are many rooms where placing a multichannel system properly is quite difficult.
