FYI, Arcam has deleted multichannel SACD playback capability from the DV137, citing distortion problems. They say they are working on fixing the issue, but don't know if or when a fix will be available.

I googled Shanling/Allen Wright and visited his website (results below), and I now know that various people have had various problems with various players. Shanling modder, Wally Underwood, dissuaded me from contemplating any pre-owned machines "because these things break". Perhaps Zeus or others can shed more light?

I think Allen Wright's point, other than build quality, has more to do with the tubes being there purely for colouration of the sound. It's not as if Allen is against tubes as he builds some very fine amplification products (going by reputation). While maybe there is an element of self-promotion in some of his remarks, Allen knows his stuff and it's worth at least taking in what he says. But in the end it's what you think of the player. I've read enough to know that it's not for me.

New NAD T585 universal disc player!

"Unlike many “universal” DVD players, the T585 does not convert the SACD’s DSD format into CD’s PCM format—which defeats the sonic advantage. Instead we keep separate DSD signal paths to maintain the highest level possible of DVD, CD and SACD audio quality."

Cheers! ;-)

Dear Sony,

Nowadays, there are many millions of SACD compatible players worldwide.... and more SACD titles are wanted.

Regards,
Leonardo F.L.

Poll: Do you have any SACD compatible DVD player?

Somebody earlier asked how many SA-CD players there were but I couldn't find the original query:

"News from Sony indicates that there is global installed base of more than 13 million Super Audio CD players, with in excess of 180 models currently available from 37 manufacturers covering every application from entry-level stereo players to high-end multi-channel audiophile systems. The number of manufacturers seeking licenses and the number of models available continues an upward year-on-year trend." - Super Audio CD News

Support for SA-CD is still on track for the PS3 later this year which should boost numbers considerably.

One of my friend works at Sony and I had the opportunity to ask him if he could get me a SCD-XA3000ES at a good price.

Answer from Sony : the 3000ES and 9000ES are not available anymore and WILL NOT be replaced by any other player.

I also called 3 Sony Store in Paris (France) and always got the same answer : "we don't sell anything related to SACD anymore besides hometheater systems that include SACD capabilities".

The sun doesn't shine on SACD anymore at Sony :(

Mr. Michellon, haven't you seen the forthcoming Sony SACD player?

Maybe they don't know that PS3 will play SACD. ;-)

I'm not sure about the future of SACD, maybe Sony will put DSD format on Blu-ray dics if they win the battle against HD DVD and HVD, but there is one thing I am sure about: I don't know a place where skepticism is as popular as in France (I am French). It's true for SACD, and also I see it here in China (where I live) with lots of French companies that didn't believe in the Chinese market till the late 90s, as German and American companies had been florishing for many years...
What I'm trying to say is that we people are responsible for the evolution of market, and one thing is sure: SACD will stay, whatever some Sony people say, just as Vinyl stayed and will not disappear.
It is actually interesting to think about what kind of technology could be better than DSD, are they aware of any right now? Maybe we SACD fans would all get a new love...
Another question: would DSD technology sound better on a full Blu-Ray disc of 50 GB storage capacity for the same recording ? And what about a 1 TB HVD? I'm curious...

The current Arcam website describes the DV137 as having "stereo and multi-channel DVD-Audio and SACD playback". Did they fix the problem, or is the website out of date?
