Wow! This is my all time favorite Beethoven symphony cycle and I never dreamed it would be re-issued on SACD. The performance is, to me, the perfect compromise between the "lively" school of e.g. Szell or the more recent HIP cycles and the more "profound" view of Kemperer or more recently Barenboim, with perhaps a slight nod to the profound. The Berlin Philharmonic (still more Furtwangler's BPO than von Karajan's at this point) plays like... the Berlin Philharmonic, and the sound is beautiful and honest if not spectacular on RBDC. The recordings were remastered at 96/24 before conversion to SACD if you're keeping score.

So apparently it is (only) possible to buy this today directly from Tower Japan and have it shipped via a service. My question to those with more experience with this sort of thing is are these discs likely to be available domestically any time soon? Or should I just bite the bullet and order them from Tower?

My questions exactly.
Tower Japan have not offered SACD releases before, have they? So there is little precedent to which we can refer, is there?

This is probably my favorite stereo cycle as well due to the fact that the BPO plays more like Furtwängler's orchestra than subsequently under Karajan (who I do enjoy in many recordings but whose Beethoven with the BPO I have always found a bit too polished). I bit the bullet but have not received it yet. I will post my impressions when it arrives, probably sometime next week.

Had my son pick up 3 of these at Tower in Shibuya. Will wait a few months and then sell 2 of them. Should be worth a lot when they go OOP.

Got my copy a few days ago, this remastering is splendid. Strongly recommend.

Interesting.

Have you heard the Haitink version on LSO Live yet? I quite like that version, except for a few rough spots where they overdrive the input amplifiers on the ninth symphony.

I finally broke down and ordered a copy. I report back after I've listened.

I would be most interested in any listening impressions by those who have acquired this set.

Oh, shame on you, using sacd's as investments. :)
