Look guys, I don't come along this way too often now but does anybody know if the Oppo BD 105D is to be replaced this year? Would a purchase now be foolhardy?

No. Well unless someone corrects me OPPO are not going to be releasing a new Blu-ray replacement for the BDP-105. I have this confirmed from OPPO Europe. They did not say what was in development either though.
I suspect a 4K/8K PCM/DSD multi-channel streamer is in the works perhaps with a 4k/8k disc drive if the format gets sorted.

Would love to see them produce a fully loaded audiophile MC pre-amp with PCM/DSD streaming support.

One can only hope

Thank you. This has given me the confidence to go ahead with a purchase.

You've made a very wise choice, hiredfox. It is an incredible swiss army knife able to play just about everything. The Blu Ray performance is flawless and I certainly hope you avail yourself of some of the incredible BD~A discs currently on the market....a good place to begin your journey......Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76 - Auryn Quartet

I pretty much agree their next machine will be 4k, although I doubt you will see any 8k machines from Oppo or anyone for quite awhile. It would be pretty pointless for anyone to introduce another 2k Blu-Ray machine now while 4k is on the launching pad ready for liftoff very soon in players.

Oppo players usually follow the big boys in consumer electronics like Sony, Samsung, etc. So, while we might see some 4k players before Christmas, I would not expect a new Oppo with 4k until sometime next year. The interesting thing will be what additional features/improvements it will also have for audio.

Frankly I would be leery of investing in any machine touted as 4k compliant, until the 4k specification has been approved and released and has had time to mature. It would be foolhardy otherwise.

If you need a new machine straight away, get the Sony BDP-S7200 or the new BDP-S6500 when it's finally released within this month. Both machines will upscale 2k BD to 4k on a 4k display.

Oppo Blu-Ray performance is not flawless via HDMI, Sony has far better HF sound & easier to watch more natural video, admittedly when used with a Sony AVR.

Doubtful. Oppo has been pretty clear that they are waiting for a 4K Blu Ray standard before releasing new disc players.
