This one seems to have slipped through the cracks: Nielsen's complete 6 symphonies recorded in multi channel DSD and released on 3 SACDs and 1 BD~A (24/192).

Placed my order today.

seems the reviews are decidedly low for this set.

ALWAYS the bearer of glad tidings, eh, FD?

Seems Gramophone Magazine awarded the set (4 LSO RBCDs) the Editor's Choice in 2011 and BBC Music Magazine awarded it their Orchestral Choice March 2011.

So much for bad reviews!

From this set I have the 4,5,1 & 6, I bought these along with some other LSO Live SACD’s a few years ago but the acoustics of Barbican pretty much put an end to my LSO Live purchases.

We now have the BIS Nielsen symphonies, better performance and better sound, really no contest.

In recent review of another LSO Live in Fanfare magazine, this one Mendelssohn Sym. 3 with Gardiner the reviewer pretty much sums up the sound of Barbican;

“Again it’s a shame that what would have been genuinely competitive versions of the Mendelssohn’s works should have let down again by the sound of this hall. It’s high time the city fathers either totally revamp the place or-better yet-tear it down”.

Hey, I look at what everyone has written on this site. Don't blame me for actually reading the threads and reviews on THIS site for the thoughts others have expressed. Quit being the hater.

With all the negatives lodged at the Barbican acoustics, I am eliciting some nice sounds out of my system.

The Mendelssohn, Vahe cited, sounds fantastic on MY system. Must be my disc treatments and HD damper and pricey power cords, etc., which have salvaged MANY a lackluster recording (SACD and otherwise) from the garbage bin (or Goodwill bin).

For what....for constructing a better mousetrap?

Ever wonder why downloads are the rage. They're not inexpensive....they sometimes don't offer the multichannel content when available and they provide nothing tangible.........it's because a lot of listeners are disenchanted with the playback of physical discs.

Truth be told: almost ALL discs out of their cases need a huge Vitamin B thrust. And I give it to them.

I only apologize when I'm wrong, sammie, and when I receive the Nielsen discs, I will report directly to YOU.

Live,

From the Barbican

Well, you were wrong in your initial response to me, but then, I don't expect you to see it. You're too wrapped up in your own effort to deflect and spin.

You were correct about the AP 3 channel Tony Bennett SACD being abridged but then I did procure the entire concert on RBCD (cheap) and it paled in comparison to the sonics of the AP SACD (as I suspected).

The reviews of the Nielsen set weren't ALL bad, as you alluded to. Castor had a positive review of Davis' Nielsen 1st and 6th symphonies on this site but did allude to the dry acoustics of the Barbican. There is also an excellent review on AmazonUK (by reviewer Ultrarunner) which details all six symphonies.

As always, reviews are subjective so a wait and hear approach. At under $6 per disc delivered (including the entire set on 1 BD~A in 5.1 192/24) not a bad deal at all. (contains 3 mch SACDs and 1 BD~A)

And those that have a disdain for the Barbican acoustics can always play the discs in stereo and avoid the dry acoustic ambience of the Barbican.
