I have over 4000 RBCDs and SACDs and have never duplicated recordings and I do not use a database. I have a photographic memory when it comes to these little devils and what I have bought 20 years ago remains in my memory and usually where I bought it, when I bought it, and what it sounds like.

So I'm not the only one....

I'm astonished that in 20 years of collecting (and occasionally listening to) classical CDs and SACDs, I have never accidentally bought the same disc twice, and I have nearly 13,000 CDs and over 500 SACDs, plus about 30 blurays. And like you, my memory is my only database.

Well, I probably have a whole lot more. I just guesstimate. It's probably closer to twice that. I just say 4000 to make my wife happy (at least a little).

It's not so much a question of what I know, but rather of what my wife knows. We've endured through 45 years of happy marriage, but there are some disadvantages in being married to a CPA who's perfectly content listening to Barry Manilow on AM radio.

Only here at SACD.net have I encountered folks who understand my desire to just sit and listen intently to a great recording, not as background music and not as something to fill the silences of conversation. I don't know a single person in meatspace who understands this part of me; just you guys.

Does anyone know a woman who can wallow in beautiful sound without distraction -- no reading, conversation, or toil -- sans influence of booze or drugs? I've never met her.

I think it's part of the DNA. Man the hunter is single-tracked and LISTENS for the saber-toothed tiger. Woman the nest keeper/mother/protector of children is engineered to be multitasked-- and perhaps needs to be busy even now because of that. She is feeding, cooking, making stuff--all while listening for danger or kids with problems.

But I will continue to avoid bringing that thought up to my wife who is learning the evil Windows 8 while I am focused solely on music or the box.

And the older I get, the more single-tracked I am. And I apologize to any woman reading this for anything she might disagree with. I am obviously wrong.

I have 18 SACD, all but one (Pink Floyd) with symphonic music. They are not many but I've just started this route.

Well, because I maintain a database (my insurance company insisted I keep one because of the size of my collection) I know that I have 18/19k CDs including some 1k+ SACDs. I always seem to have a backlog of discs to play, largely because I tend to buy a lot at once. My wife, who is a professional classical musician, has given up telling me to slow down (sigh..._ - actually she does enjoy listening sometimes but only when I am around, she never bothers to put a disc on to play. Very occasionally I have duplicated something in my collection - it's funny but when that happens I have a suspicion that I may already have it in my collection.
