Does anyone have a sa-cd copy of this recording? The Tudor website lists this as an sa-cd, but there is also an rbcd of this disc with same number. Jpc usually has Tudor sacd's, but does not list one. So just wondering if it actually exists as sacd.

It would appear that Tudor have re-isssued a number of their earlier CDs as SA-CDs, but keeping the serial number the same. I guess their thinking is that the CDs will eventually be flushed from the channel and replaced by the SA-CD versions. Hardly an ideal situation if you're ordering online.

I finally got around to updating the "Unfinished" and "Great" to their new numbering to provide some consistency here.

I have the SACD version, which I obtained directly from Tudor after complaining that I received the RBCD from Tower. It had the same catalog number as the SACD on their website.

The sound and performances are IMHO excellent, but some reviewers have complained about the unemotional approach to the "Unfinished." It is, however, a fine alternative version, if not necessarily the first choice in this music.

The other Tudor symphony discs (2,4 and 5,6) are extremely fine with sensitive performanes and state-of-the-art sound.

another satisfied Tudor customer, - my partner paul could only get the RBCD of this sent to him from various amazon marketplace sellers (good performance from amazon.co.uk on this by the way, who secured A refund when one markeplace seller -Caiman- wouldn't respond). After I told him about fafnir's post, he contacted Tudor, who have sent him a free SACD replacement, and didn't even want the unwanted redbook (still sealed) returned to them. Really excellent customer service from Tudor, - in the pentatone league. B

I'm really happy that this ultimately worked out to the satisfaction of all. As you say, "another satisfied customer" of this excellent company. The other Tudor SACD recordings that I own (Janacek and Mahler 5)have been exceptional. In fact, I would rate the Janacek at 4 1/2 stars for both sound and performance. In most music, I prefer the somewhat close-in sound without excessive rear channel ambience, which Tudor provides. I look forward to their Mahler 1 and Schubert 9 with Nott and the Bambergers.

Unfortunately Tudor is very tough to obtain in the States. I had a few backorders canceled from US mailorders before placing an order with JPC, which has offered prompt delivery at a good price.

Yes but short of obtaining one directly from Tudor, how does one get a copy? I ordered from Amazon.com off this website's page and was sent the RBCD, I wrote and complained and asked for a replacement which just arrived and it is another rbcd. I called the customer service and they convinced me that if I asked for another replacement that I would just get another rbcd. So I gave up and asked for a refund. The customer service person obviously so remote from the shipping center, felt she could do nothing to correct the situation. Can Zeus talk to these Amazon folks and get the problem fixed?

I have only heard one Tudor and that is the Mahler 5. Nothing special to my ears until the end where the timpani arrives one bar early. Someone should have heard this, I mean, are they professionals or what?

Windsurfer,

I just checked the jpc website and they state that the Schubert 1,3,& 8 is in stock in SACD. I was able to obtain other Tudor SACDs there when all else failed. In contrast to other on-line vendors, they specifically list the recording as SACD.

In an email to me, Tudor claimed that all their releases in the USA were available at Forte Distribution (fortedistribution.com), but I checked and it just ain't so.

I spoke to Forte personnally and explained te problem. They assured me they were shipping the SACD, but when it arrived it was the CD.
