A bit concerning that MTT takes over 16mins for the opening movement?

Strange things are happening at Davies Hall, this disc was recorded at 192kHz. At least an improvement on 96kHz but whatever happened to DSD which we were assured was used for the Mahler survey.

My copy arrived today so no review just yet, sorry.

Did we really need yet another 5th Symphony on SACD?

Here is a warm, cuddly and beguiling performance absolutely impeccably played by the SFSO, beautifully recorded with amazing stereo imaging - what else would you expect with Gus Skinas mastering - and with MTT adopting a languid pace that works unexpectedly well drawing the listener in, in a way that faster, edgier performances such as Pletnev's do not. What Tchaikovsky would have thought of it is anybody's guess but I loved it and the disc has my unreserved recommendation.

The Elephant in this particular room is answered affirmatively.

+1

I echo your sentiments, hiredfox: a splendid performance and state of the art recording.

Absolutely one of the best orchestral recordings out there. All the excitement but not a trace of brittle glare.

Tilson-Thomas did the 1st symphony years ago for DG. I wonder what he would do with that.

But why such a poor 3 star review on Amazon.com & Amazon.Co UK ? ? ? has put me off from buying.

Well, who do you trust? Foxy or FerenCT, who posted the same review on the amazon sites.
