Can someone who owns this SACD, tell me how it compares to the 1999 remaster redbook?

on SACD this album still sounds overload, loud and shrill. SACD adds little improvement over 1999 remaster, perhaps slightly more definition and not so shrill high end. Clearly the worst of the Roxy sacds soundwise.

thanks for that! Indeed what I was afraid of. I'll leave it at the first three then.

What? Country Life was my first Roxy Music SHM SACD and it sounds fine to me.

Try the last three of the bunch - Manifesto, Flesh + Blood and Avalon - and hear WHAT can be done with Roxy Music masters.

Since its initial release back in 1974 Country Life was overtly critised for over-cooked mix. Pity, two of my all time faves - Out of the blue and The Thrill of it all - are on this bad luck album.

I have analyzed this particular album after ripping it to .dsf

I can confirm, that DR values are the same as for Platinum SHM-CD

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/84166 e.g. no sign of unwanted compression.

I have purchased all of the Roxy Music albums on SHM-SACD single layer except for Avalon. I do not want to double dip with all the SHM releases concurring the previously released titles not to mention they dropped multichannel codecs.

Country Life sounds marvellous -Triptych is the best sounding track with this release! Worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Anyway cross album comparison proved previous release of Avalon being the best sounding from the whole bunch.

In comparison to its predecessor (Flesh & Blood) Avalon sounds more airy and posses more dynamics.

I am happy that Universal Japan had done this job better this time.

Is it possible to compare SACD to 1999 remaster of the album under the thread? Platinum SHM uses the same 2015 mastering as SACD.
I have all ROXY albums on both SACD and 2009 HDCD Japan mini lps. The SACDs of course are way superior than 1999 remasters.

I have gotten rid of all Roxy HDCDs except for Viva! and Early Years- compilation. Soundwise the new master transfers sound open and more dynamic than HDCDs - but from track to track it can be subjective.

For me there is no better objective comparison than this

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/7378

compared to that

When Avalon had been released on HDCD and also SA-CD shortly after in 2003 I have had bad player so the differences were not so obious as with modern DACs incorporatetd in latest devices.

The same objectives can be applied to all other albums.

Thanks Rickko for your excellent review of this disc. It confirms my suspicions about the inferiority of this SACD (as was indeed already noted by current93). I will definitely not spend my money on this one.
It's a real shame as this is the last truly great Roxy album (only one duff track).
Although I don't think the 1999 redbook is as bad as you suggest (is it really that much inferior to an already bad SACD?), I mostly listen to the US vinyl remaster of a couple of years back (the Capitol Vaults remaster), which sounds slightly better (but this may just be due to the fact that the intrinsic noise of vinyl replay conceals the brightness of the recording somewhat)

I agree that a remixed, multichannel release of this album is warranted.

I should note that although indeed the limitations of this disc probably relate to recording decisions, the fact that John Punter was involved is in itself immaterial, as he was also involved as engineer for the two previous albums For Your Pleasure and Stranded, which sound fantastic.

btw, at least the first album has been confirmed earlier this month, by Wilson, for 5.1 release:
