I'm sure this will be a fine recording - but I wonder why they pinched the cover from Nagano's (rather good) Brahms 4?

Presumably they both "pinched" it from the same source, i.e. used a stock reproduction of the same painting.

It's happened before: see Mozart: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - English Concert/Manze and Mozart: Serenata Notturna, Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Savall.

Concerning the Mozart discs, the painting is from a stage set of "The Magic Flute" in 1815 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. So it's no surprise that it's a favourite for a Mozart CD cover

The painting on the covers of the Prokofiev and Brahms discs is Kazimir Malevich's Red-cavalry (1928-1932)

So it makes sense to associate it with Prokofiev (same country and era), but less with Brahms. The painting entered the public domain in 2005 (70 years after Malevich's death), which may explain why they used it for the 2006 Brahms CD cover.

Thanks for the ID. BIS used paintings by Malevich for the covers of Prokofiev: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3 - Kempf, Litton and Prokofiev: Violin Sonatas - Gluzman, but this one is more representational (i.e. less abstract) than those.

...almost a mirror to what Prokofiev was trying to do with his 5th Symphony and Scythian Suite.

Listened to the once over the weekend, feel it's a must buy. Really nice wind playing, in particular. SQ best I've heard Bis get at this venue.

If this isn't my disc of 2015, it'll have to be something extremely special to better this!

Glad to hear it's so good (my copy is on order). As I've said elsewhere on this forum, I hope that BIS stretches this series out (one symphony a disc?) and includes as many "fillers" as possible. I hope also that Vadim Gluzman will record the violin concertos with the Bergen Philharmonic in due course.

Indeed! I also hope for an expansive set of highlights from Cinderella from these forces (if not the complete score).
