Cheers, Yoro.

I contacted Oppo and they even said the DAP in the Oppo sucks.

What model number?

I'm talking about an older model...not the newer ones that are outstanding.

DV-981 HD

I contacted a Sony Tech today and asked what DAC is used in this player.
They wouldn't tell me.

He said Sony doesn't give this information out.
???
You'd think I was asking for secret sauce ingredients.

My guess is if it was any good they'd boast about it.
So you can buy their products but you can't know what you're getting...Pffft!

Interesting.

You were attempting to obtain Sony proprietary information from an OEM support representative?

Look at it from that rep's position. He/she had no idea who you are and what you plan to do with that information. That said, the rep could possibly lose his job if he did supply you with that information. Also, that rep probably didn't have that specific information in the first place.

What did you think Sony's response to your query would be?

You were asking for that information from the wrong group. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss a company for your lack of experience in such matters.

Exactly what I got from Oppo...the answer!

Why would the DAC in their Player be a secret?

Remember, he didn't say he didn't know.
He said Sony will not give out that info.

Anyways, I find it strange and doesn't help Sony's reputation as arguably the most paranoid Company ever.

That's not strange at all. In fact, it's typical for most large companies.

Support groups usually don't have access to proprietary Design group information. If that information is as important as you're implying, why didn't you escalate the issue to a higher level? That's typically how something like that is addressed.

What higher level?

I contacted Sony Canada's product online support and they didn't know but gave me a number of another division that should.
I called it and was told "Sony doesn't give out that kind of information".

I was puzzled so I asked what he meant and he said they DO know what DAC is in it but they're not going to tell me...it's "not their policy"

BTW~I've given up incorporating this player in my system as I know what I have with Oppo and know how to incorporate it into my system to get the results I want.

My last Sony.

DV-981 HD

The DV-981 HD is not that bad. Else I just wasted 49 dollars plus shipping to get it repaired by Oppo (they never mentioned anything negative about the DAP when I asked) ...

Here's the reply I got from an Oppo representative.

"The DV-981HD uses a standard Cirrus Logic 24-bit DAC, so it will not be as good as most receivers. So we would recommend that you use HDMI wherever available, as this will give you the best audio from this player."

It's also important to use the HDMI over the other digital outputs as the signal quality stays the same ONLY with the HDMI output.

i've had the DV-981HD forever, and it's my 'knock around' rig. i use hdmi with it. i also have the BDP-105, which I use for analog, as well as a bdp-83 se nuforce for blu-ray. other than lack of blu-ray capability, i'm satisfied with the DV-981HD for general purposes (including SACD)...

DV-981 HD

Oppo came out with the 980H and 981 at around the same time. The 980H was built to have superior analog audio out, the 981 was built to have superior video upscaling. Basically both upscale video and both do SACD, but where they spent extra money on each player varies between audio and video. Oppo's comment on how it was superior to the earlier audio-centric 970h is:

The tonal qualities of the DV-980H should surpass that of the DV-970HD. The main reason for this is that we hand selected new capacitor and resistor manufacturers, redesigned the DAC layout, are using an improved Cirrus Logic CS4361 DAC and the latest, heavily modified MTK solution for increased audio decoding fidelity. The end result is a system that is more robust and refined over our previous DVD player designs.
